My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Second, if we Catholics are right about time and eternity, they have all the time they need in the Petrine one day that is as a thousand years.

That would be worse yet...Your saints would have to hear a thousand years worth of prayer in one day...

For gravy, it may be self-delusion, but I know a few people who claim to receive direct comfort and counsel from the Saints. Clearly, that happens through the Holy Spirit if it happens at all.

Are you sure???

1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1Ti 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

...I have had experiences...

And they, apparently, trump what Scripture says.

Love is stronger than death.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Are we about trying to think clearly and to approach the Truth, or are we about appearing to vanquish our opponents and sowing confusion?

When the FIRST happens; the the SECOND is the result; don't you think?

The way I read the Book; there ain't NOBODY nowhere yet!

The way I read the Book is that the souls of the saved who have died go up, immediately...
The souls of the unsaved who have died go down, to Hell...

What do we need a RAPTURE for

To get the Bride off the earth and to the Wedding while God passes judgement on the earth, during the Great Tribulation...

and a final JUDGEment for if it's a done deal already?

Cuz God says so, for one...And another, everyone must have a chance before the Judge...Unsaved dead will be raised and there will be many living people there as well...And they will all fail...

Hell's just temporary for those people...When God destroys the Earth, Hell will be destroyed as well...God says those condemned will be judged and sent into outer darkness, for eternity...

That being so, how could it be wrong to look at an image of him and sigh or weep as one looks at an image of one's beloved? My beloved condescended to provide me with an appearance to sigh and weep over.

One, because God says not to...And two, no one knows what Jesus looked like...And according to the description John gives of Jesus in Revelation, he now looks nothing like he did when he was in the flesh...

When the deceiver shows up, he will be in the flesh...Likely look a lot like people would think Jesus looked like while he was in the flesh...

I’m a monotheist. I think finding the Truth, even seeking it, is good for everybody.

“O Lord, in Thee have I trusted, let me never be confounded.”

So some members of his body are obvious in their splendor, but all are members,

Not according to the scripture...Some are eyes, some are feet, but all are equal...

From my perspective, many Protestants miss part of the significance of the Incarnation. The Word became Flesh, through a woman, the Incarnate Word was born, had a mother.

That's as far as it goes with me...And of course, Mary was blessed...

The only and entire focus is on the life and death of Jesus...The Savior of mankind...

God needed a human body for Jesus to become human...That's all there is too it...Mary lived on and died in obscurity...

Simple as that...I'm not missing anything of significance...Mary had absolutely nothing to offer, besides Jesus and she didn't offer anything...

There is absolutely no Christian reason to elevate obscure Mary to a position that was not marked in the scriptures...

God says those condemned will be judged and sent into outer darkness, for eternity...

The BOOK says:

Revelation 22:14-15

“Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

ALL??

Do you REALLY have this problem understanding what is written?

Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Some protestants may see this as two subjects: BIG Mary, little christ. I see it as one subject: The Incarnation.

The Incarnation, while necessary for Jesus to become flesh, is past...If I was going to have a picture of Jesus, it would be him alone, seated on a throne, in heaven...

You guys are always stuck on the wrong side of the Cross...

The

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS

OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

SECTION 71

Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney Rigdon, at Hiram, Ohio, December 1, 1831. HC 1: 238–239. The Prophet had continued to translate the Bible with Sidney Rigdon as his scribe until this revelation was received, at which time it was temporarily laid aside so as to enable them to fulfill the instruction given herein. The brethren were to go forth to preach in order to allay the unfriendly feelings that had developed against the Church as a result of the publication of some newspaper articles by Ezra Booth, who had apostatized.

1–4, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are sent forth to proclaim the gospel; 5–11, Enemies of the saints shall be confounded.

1 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto you my servants Joseph Smith, Jun., and Sidney Rigdon, that the time has verily come that it is necessary and expedient in me that you should open your mouths in proclaiming my gospel, the things of the kingdom, expounding the mysteries thereof out of the scriptures, according to that portion of Spirit and power which shall be given unto you, even as I will.

2 Verily I say unto you, proclaim unto the world in the regions round about, and in the church also, for the space of a season, even until it shall be made known unto you.

3 Verily this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you.

4 Wherefore, labor ye in my vineyard. Call upon the inhabitants of the earth, and bear record, and prepare the way for the commandments and revelations which are to come.

5 Now, behold this is wisdom; whoso readeth, let him understand and receive also;

6 For unto him that receiveth it shall be given more abundantly, even power.

7 Wherefore, confound your enemies; call upon them to meet you both in public and in private; and inasmuch as ye are faithful their shame shall be made manifest.

8 Wherefore, let them bring forth their strong reasons against the Lord.

9 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you—there is no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper;

10 And if any man lift his voice against you he shall be confounded in mine own due time.

11 Wherefore, keep my commandments; they are true and faithful. Even so. Amen.
