"But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do..." -Matthew 6:7
I’ll try to remember the deal. Feel free to say,”Hey, you said you’d ...”
In this case, though, I meant by “your guys” the translators. If I’d known which version I might have said, say, “the NIV guys,” (as opposed to the team of Wookies our bishops got to do their version.)
It’s a problem when people don’t understand and know it. It’s a bad problem when they don’t understand and think they do.
Yay C. S. Lewis!
So what do you think of when you hear “mysticism”?
In my growing-up culture it was a neutral word. But when I was helping a couple put together a wedding, the groom didn’t like where Cranmer refers to “the mystical union” between Christ and the Church. I began to think that for some people the word had a dark side.
When you inject a ‘mysticism’ into something that intrinsically lacks reality, that is dark, as it promotes a lie, like all the apparitions that people celebrate.
They “see” them because they are predisposed to believing a lie.
Same old same old
Actually if you do the Rosary the usual way there are 53 Aves, 6 Paters, 6 Gloria Patris, 6 Fatima Prayers and it all starts with the Apostles Creed.
The Dominican way you have 50.5 Aves, 5 Paternosters, 6 Gloria Patris.
But looking at the problem like this is silly, because the Rsary isn’t all we do. With Mass and the Matins, Lauds, Vespers, and Compline, then all the proportions change.
I still don’t know what you mean by mysticism though.
Of course its the same old same old. Its been the same scripture since it was written and nothing has changed it. The admonition is still valid.
vain repitition is not a true petition
A "fight" takes two, ya know.
Rather than assume that those with whom you disagree, "just don't get" it, why not try to see all sides? You have strong feelings about what you believe, so do the others. No one needs to make it into a fight, when adults can discuss these things respectfully. Just because some disagree with some of the doctrines in Catholicism, it doesn't mean that there isn't also agreement with some of them. Lastly, remember that Luther was NOT the first, NOR only, person who saw the condition of the Catholic Church at that time as needing to be reformed back to the original orthodoxy...you know, the Bible.
Well, Dawg, when I pray the Rosary, I am also thinking of the events in the life of Mary and Christ that are enumerated in the Mysteries.
I can rarely remember them in order anymore, though I used to be able to, so I keep a copy of the mysteries in front of me to refer to them, or use a DVD that states each part of each mystery before each decade.
Contrary to others’ opinions, I don’t find it difficult to 1)hold the beads, say the hail marry, and keep a mental picture of the mystery. I guess some people do.
I do keep the daily mass readings on the computer, so that when I can’t get to the mass, I can at least say the respnsorial psalm and read the scriptures. Yeah technology!
Luther was a creep - why do you like him?
I am exhausted I have been trying.
But looking at the problem like this is silly,
Sure is.
Where is that one found and how many times? What about the Holy Spirit?
It is incomplete, it leaves out the Gloria Patri and the Fatima prayers. So, yes, it is incorrect.
Well, then, why don't you provide numbers?
I find that Catholics are great at telling others that they are wrong, but really fail at correcting the errors.
Come to think of it, it's pretty pervasive throughout Catholicism based on previous experience.......
The implication of mysticism is that there is something spiritual there that may not be completely discernable to all persons present.
You know that how?
To either comment.....
Well Mad Dawg provided the numbers in 4267. You have previously assured me that you can read and comprehend posts here, and it is clear that you read Dawg’s posts. I didn’t think it was necessary to repeat what he said, but I guess I was wrong. So sorry.
I refer you to post 4267 for the numbers.
So now works are a suggestion?
Yeah...
Sure...
