Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

That's a keeper, smvoice. Thanks for putting it so succinctly.
Oh please...
In a word, the Word is Jesus, not Scripture.
In a word, the word is scripture, the words of God...
Psa 8:1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Psa 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
“In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” 2 Tim. 2:25,26.
No need for the Holy Spirit then, if we have a infallible group of men labeled a *magisterium* then is there?
Do you get that in the Scripture v. tradition question thhat amounts to a circular argument?
No, and please explain, MD. Thanks!
No mercy??? It's the ultimate mercy...Jesus did it ALL...How much more mercy can you get than ALL???
There was a time when I didn’t get it because I was spiritually blind, not because I wasn’t seeking. I didn’t actually refuse it, but I just didn’t participate because I didn’t understand.
But are you one of his sheep??? Does he know your name??? Are you indwelt with the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead???
If not, Jesus left some words for you to ponder...
As long as you have your soap box out and are in full rant why don't you explain the differences between a faction, a sect, an order and a denomination. It will help to illuminate what a vacuous posting you just made.
More people died in the witch scare in Northern Europe than in the Spanish Inquisition.
And as always in these discussions, I want to point out that “The Inquisition” is vague. Which one? There were several.
The Catholic answer is, “Of course! I was baptized.”
Wait - no one is suggesting that Jesus is in a perpetual state of being crucified. The mystical part happened on Good Friday.
The eucharist is entirely different from this discussion.
Correct - all of our sins (meaning us moderns and anyone A.D.) were future to Him - however the sins of those around Him and those in the past (B.C.) were also under consideration (By the Father).
Do you have any sources for that Apostolic Tradition story of Mary's assumption? Did anyone reliable write about such an event? Did anyone actually see it happen? Did John, to whom Jesus entrusted the care of his mother, write anything about it? I assume she probably was not still alive when he was exiled on the island of Patmos (90AD) and wrote the book of Revelation. I have no problem about it if people want to believe that she was assumed either alive or dead, but I am curious about when such a dogma was adopted into the Catholic faith and why it was.
Excuses, excuses.......
I see it’s *Do as I say, not as I do* time.
again.......
Your “facts” are completely bogus:
1) “You cant possibly be that ignorant unless youre talking about a building. Have you ever heard of the inquisition?”
I sure have. And I know that I do not confuse the inquisition with the Church of Rome itself. The Spanish Inquisition, for instance, was staffed by ecclesiastical AND SECULAR officials. The simple fact is that you most likely have never read a single book on the inquisition and have no idea of what you’re talking about.
2) “Let me give you one paragraph that might get you started proving your point.”
You’re about to quote an obviously anti-Catholic website. Do you normally rely on anti-semites for your info on Jews?
3) “In NEWS1675, we revealed that one of the psychological devices priests used to get their female penitents to have sex with them was the threat to lie to the “Holy” Inquisition, so the woman would be torturously murdered.”
Impossible. 1) Everyone questioned by the inquisition was asked who their enemies were. All the woman would have to do is say that the priest was her enemy and that would be the end of it. 2) People were NEVER tortured to death and in fact torture was extremely rare. Off the top of my head, I know of no cases at all of women being tortured. 3) Torture - really a form of water boarding - was used to gain information. No blood could be spilled. No bones broken. No permanent harm done. No one could be tortured more than once and no one could be tortured for more than 15 minutes.
4) “Since history books have been largely rewritten, few people know specific details of this murderous campaign that lasted over 1,200 years, killing 75 million people.”
That’s complete nonsense. First, the first inquisition was around 1200. The last one of a similar nature to that one was in the early 18th century. That means no more than 500 years, not 1200 years. Also, no more than 15,000 people total were ever executed after inquisition trials - and all were executed by the state. The Church had no authority or ability to execute and never wanted it. The number I just gave is what reputable historians put forward. Only cranks and bigots out of touch with reality make claims in the millions. Here’s ho wwe know that to be the case:
75,000, 000 supposed victims divided by 500 years = an average of 410 executions every single day. If there were that many executions for 500 years, or even for one year, someone would have noticed. Not a single record - LITERALLY NOT ONE SINGLE RECORD - even gives a remote hint about executions numbering in the thousands week after week for hundreds of years on end. It just never happened. And people who make such claims make themselves look like morons to those of us who actually read books and can do basic math. Most anti-Catholics, however, are too stupid to do basic math apparently, and too bigotted to read books.
5) “But, once you understand the unprecedented horrors of the Inquisition, you will never look at Roman Catholicism the same way again.”
Once someone realizes how anti-Catholics try to scam people with outrageous lies - remember they’re counting on the fact that their fans are too stupid as public school products to actually do basic math or read books - they will never look at anti-Catholic scumbags the same way again.
6) “Im sure from that you will do some serious investigating to prove them wrong.”
Thankfully I did it years ago when I got a PhD in Medieval History with an emphasis on Church History.
Good find, metmom. Never knew that. Thanks.
When your not based in scripture your comments come back to bite you dont they.
I wonder what He will say to you.
I don't wonder...First off, Jesus already knows that we do not dishonor his earthly mother...And secondly, he will say,
Mat 12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
Mat 12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
Mat 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
Mat 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Jesus honored his mother, and his father...But he never told us to unduly honor his parents...Was Mary the most blessed [not bles'sed] among women??? Certainly...She received the greatest blessing...
That doesn't mean we should praise her, we should, if anything, envy her...
I'm sure you have been scouring the Googelsterium for this information. Why don't you enlighten us on your findings. I've got a couple of actual books on the subject of the Dormition (Keemeesis) of the Theotokos that I don't care to transcribe for your certain rejection.
