Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

ABSOLUTELY INDEED . . . DOCTRINES OF DEMONS.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh “disrespectful” . . .
As though masses of RC’s on FR have not been
OUTRAGEOUSLY “disrespectful”
to PRODDYS as individuals, to Proddy beliefs, to Proddy practices, to Protestantism generally, . . .
ad nauseum . . . haughtily, arrogantly, self-righteously, with massive intense !!!DEMANDINGNESS!!! that FR conform more closely to an office of the Vatican . . .
etc.
etc.
etc.
What oceans of hubris!
WELL PUT.
Thx.
1. Thanks for your Unping. Very thoughtful and consistent with the norms here. /s
2. That the cult headquartered in the Vatican demonstrates relentlessly its idolatrous Ishtar-Mary-Goddess focus is demonstrated hereon almost 24/7/365 days and certainly around the world, the same. There’s no better description for the OBSERVED behaviors and pontifications of many dozens of RC posters.
3. If y’all don’t like the most accurate label I can come up with—quit proving it true!
4. Thanks for the personal attack. It merely adds to my Heavenly reward.
RATHER GREATLY LIKE the many thousands of unique clusters of tolerably homogeneous religionists with the vast collection of groups of the Vatican headquartered Ishtar-Mary-Goddess cult headed by Pope B. . . . along with their confusing DAFFYNITIONARY and double-speak weasel worded documents taking both to all sides of many issues as "their dogma."
Incredibly impressive duplicities aplenty!
By all accounts credible scholars agree on when each of the books of the New Testament were written. The last, Revelation, was written sometime in or close to 96AD. That would put all of them written between 37AD, only 4 years after Jesus ascension, and 96AD. The insinuation on the original post was that the original Apostles were no longer around when scripture was written and it was the RCC that was responsible for giving us scripture. My contention was that it was the writings of the Apostles long before the RCC.
I see church in the both/and position.
I believe both that church is in the body of Christ, those who believe in Jesus and the assembly of those believers.
It is completely Scriptural that the believers assembled and from those assemblies eventually the edifices were raised.
We have discussed whether these doctrines are “rooted” in Scripture and I am confident that they are. I see them in the precedents I posted as being completely Scriptural in regards to Mary.
No where does Scripture say that a belief must be rooted only in the written Word. Rather, we are told that the vine is Jesus and the Marian doctrines are firmly rooted in Jesus, God and Man who died for our sins so that we may have everlasting life.
It is a point on which we cannot agree, as we view Scripture and its purpose too differently.
John tells us, 30 There were many other signs that Jesus gave in the presence of his disciples, but they are not recorded in this book. 31 These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; believe and you will have life through his Name.
And further on this...24 It is this disciple who testifies about the things he has recorded here and we know that his testimony is true. 25 But Jesus did many other things; if all were written down, the world itself would not hold the books recording them.
And of course we know from Timothy that....14 As for you, continue with what you have learned and what has been entrusted to you, knowing from whom you received it. 15 Besides, you have known the Scriptures from childhood; they will give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, refuting error, for correcting and training in Christian life. 17 Through Scripture the man of God is made expert and thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Scripture is written so that we will believe. It is a Testament to who Jesus is and from whence He came and how we are to believe in Him.
It is the basis of our faith and we do not contradict what it teaches. And within is all we need to believe, and to know Jesus, to love Him and to follow Him and to have life with Him.
But, we have a clear statement from John that there is so much more.
God and history are not all bound within the pages of that Glorious Book. It’s a very good foundation, but it would be impossible as John said for ALL of it to be there. The world could not hold it due to its size.
Jesus said He had much still to tell them, but He had to go so that the Holy Spirit could come to REMIND them of all that He had said, and to lead them to all truth.
Protestant can’t seem to accept that what God has done for one in Scripture He can do for others, even if Scripture doesn’t explicitly say that He has done that.
Let me ask you this.
Do you believe Moses is in heaven?
Scripture doesn’t explicitly say that. Yet, in the Transfiguration Jesus is seen with Moses.
In Mary, we do not honor her because of her glory, but because of God’s.
I know that the Church teaches that the Jewish people are our older brothers and sisters in faith. I know that Christians of all denominations have had anti Semitic feelings, and that in the past few years, maybe longer, there has been a rise in some Christian churches in advocacy for Israel.
I am always a little suspicious when I listen to them, especially someone like John Hagee, because it seems that they are more interested in bringing about the end times or trying to discern them.
Did Jesus not tell us that no one but the Father knows the day and the hour when the Son of Man will return. We are not to worry, but trust that God’s will is being done. Jesus tells us to be watchful, as in alert, to endure and to trust.
We pray, we obey the word, we take heed that our souls are ready for Him when He comes for us. That is the coming that should concern us, for we should live as if we will die before that time.
The beliefs were those of Christians as they still are today.
There is no Roman Catholic Church, it is the universal church in Rome.
The distinction of Catholic and protestant is a man made one, but alas, one that serves a purpose.
I sure am glad I’ve become too good for everyone and above the fray now. lol.
We have, but we are not responsible for those who choose to reject it.
So, has the requirement changed from actually says to supports?
Will have to read this later.
Do you endorse or agree that Mary should be linked with or referred to as a pagan temple prostitute?
For God so loved the world He sent a book.
I Corinthians 4:6 Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes; that in us you might learn not to go beyond the things which are written; that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other.
Luke writes in Acts that even after listening to Paul and Silas searching the scriptures was to be commended.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
>>Do you believe Moses is in heaven?<<
I never speculate on things like that unless I personally know the person and have been able to experience their heart.
>>Did Jesus not tell us that no one but the Father knows the day and the hour when the Son of Man will return.
You may be getting into an area that gets complicated for you. You have already said you hesitate on Revelation. Scripture tells us that there will be a seven year tribulation down to the day. Now if that is prophesied those alive at that time surely will know the exact day when it is going to be a specific number of days after the Anti Christ enters the Temple.
Have we descended into semantics now? Why do you all dance around, deflect, or obfuscate when asked for scriptural proof (or support if that is easier) for the bodily assumption of Mary. Could it be because there isnt any?
The RCC: putting the "antics" in semantics.
. . . . He sent a book.
It’s not Proddys’ fault that the Ishtar-Mary-Goddess cult headquartered in the Vatican folks
cannot tell the
DIFFERENCE
between CHRIST JESUS THE LIVING WORD
and the Bible.
Perhaps if they spent less time focusing addictively on their Ishtar-Mary-Goddess figurines they’d be better able to tell such crucial differences.
I was reading earlier today that everyone should bake a cake (preferably an angel food) and put a little Mary figurine in the center. Then surround the cake with 10 blue candles and say their rosaries as they blow out each candle. No really. I guess they can have their cake and venereat it, too.
