News Release

The Joseph Smith Papers series continues to put historic materials into the hands of modern readers. On 23 March 2011, the Church Historian’s Press released the latest book in the landmark project, Revelations and Translations, Volume 2: Published Revelations.

As a prophet of God, Joseph Smith received many types of divine communication, and this new book presents those revelations as they were printed during his lifetime. Together with its predecessor, Revelations and Translations, Volume 1: Manuscript Revelation Books , the books make the early revelations more accessible than ever before for scholars, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and anyone with an interest in the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Joseph Smith, the founding prophet and first president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The concept of continuing revelation from God to man is a foundational doctrine for Latter-day Saints. Just as Abraham, Moses and the apostles in the day of Jesus Christ received divine guidance and knowledge, Latter-day Saints consider senior Church leaders to be prophets, from Joseph Smith to current Church President Thomas S. Monson.

“The revelations dictated by Joseph Smith meant so much to the early Latter-day Saints that no sacrifice was too great to see those revelations in print,” said Robin Jensen, one of three editors for this volume. “To now hold in a single volume many of the versions of collected revelations published at such sacrifice is gratifying not only for current members, but for researchers who can use these printed revelation texts in their own scholarship.”

The new book includes photographs of each page of an original copy of the Book of Commandments (1833) and of the first edition of the Doctrine and Covenants (1835), as well as photographs or transcriptions of several other related documents. While the first Revelations and Translations book presented the revelations in the form in which the Prophet Joseph recorded them, the high-resolution photographs in volume 2 allows readers to experience the revelations the way the early Saints read them.

This volume sheds new light on the entire process of gathering, organizing and printing the first editions of the scriptures. It also contains the group of revelations that likely would have been printed in the Book of Commandments had printing not been halted by the destruction of the Church printing office in Independence, Missouri, in mid-1833.

Elder Marlin K. Jensen, Church historian and recorder, has called The Joseph Smith Papers “the single most significant historical project of our generation.” When finished, it will be the most complete and authoritative collection of documents related to Joseph Smith.

Eventually consisting of approximately 20 volumes, the Joseph Smith Papers project is organized into six series: Journals, Revelations and Translations, Documents, History, Administrative Records and Legal and Business. In addition to the two published Revelations and Translations books, Journals, Volume 1: 1832-1839 is also available.

And the saddest thing is that once a cult is formed it is extremely difficult to end it. Generations are brought up in the cult and they find it very difficult to go against their families and communities. Then there is the lure of the “revelations” from God. Who can resist a religion in which the founder claims to have had a direct relevation from God. Add a lot of smoke, mirrors and glitter and you have yourself a sef-perpetuating cult. It is all about escapism.

Elsie ...you need to leave the theological stuff to others who are capable of cranial understanding

Ok...

Mormon 7:7

And he hath brought to pass the redemption of the world, whereby he that is found guiltless before him at the judgment day hath it given unto him to dwell in the presence of God in his kingdom, to sing ceaseless praises with the choirs above, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Ghost, which are one God, in a state of happiness which hath no end.

An 1830 statement titled "Testimony of Three Witnesses"—one statement signed by three men rather than three separate statements—was published at the end of the first edition of the Book of Mormon:

Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, his brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seeen [sic] the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shewn unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvellous [sic] in our eyes. Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen.

Not to mention the Athenasius Creed which is a recognized FRAUD ... yet you guys still adhere to it’s teachings 200 years after it has been determined to be a FRAUD!!!!

You forgot Apollo's Creed too!

So, what does this have to do with Smith and his magical underwear and his celestial concubines?

Christ himself in modern revelation spoke to Joseph Smith and told him that “...all of their Creeds are an abomination to me”.

Sorry; but you are remembering wrong.

'christ' said NOTHING to Joseph Smith in a vision.

A 'personage' spoke to JS (according to his story, anyway) and said, "This is my son; listen to him."

The 'son' personage is not on record as saying ANYTHING.

These 'personages' are NOT named in the record and JS did NOT use the test to see if they bad BONES or not.

...HAD BONES...

The Doctrine and Covenants

 Section 129

Instructions given by Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, 9 February 1843, making known three grand keys by which the correct nature of ministering angels and spirits may be distinguished (see History of the Church, 5:267).

1–3, There are both resurrected and spirit bodies in heaven; 4–9, Keys are given whereby messengers from beyond the veil may be identified.

1 There are two kinds of beings in aheaven, namely: bAngels, who are cresurrected personages, having dbodies of flesh and bones—

2 For instance, Jesus said: Handle me and see, for a spirit hath not aflesh and bones, as ye see me have.

3 Secondly: the aspirits of bjust men made cperfect, they who are not resurrected, but inherit the same glory.

4 When a messenger comes saying he has a message from God, offer him your hand and request him to shake hands with you.

5 If he be an angel he will do so, and you will feel his hand.

6 If he be the spirit of a just man made perfect he will come in his glory; for that is the only way he can appear—

7 Ask him to shake hands with you, but he will not move, because it is contrary to the aorder of heaven for a just man to bdeceive; but he will still deliver his message.

8 If it be the adevil as an angel of light, when you ask him to shake hands he will offer you his hand, and you will not bfeel anything; you may therefore detect him.

9 These are three grand akeys whereby you may know whether any administration is from God

John 20:17

One fact about this passage that the [Mormons] fail to note is that Jesus was always very careful to distinguish His relationship with the Father from the relationship His disciples had with the Father. He never addressed God as “our Father” in reference to Himself and the disciples, but rather addressed Him as “My Father” and “your Father.”2. This is significant to note because Jesus is God’s Son by nature; whereas, His disciples are God’s sons by adoption (John 1:12). As the “Son of God,” Jesus has the same nature as God (John 5:18, 19:7), but in the incarnation, Jesus took on the nature of man and thus became the “Son of Man.”3. While in His Divine nature, Jesus still has all the power and authority of God, it is in his human nature that Jesus refers to the Father as His God.

“And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.…”—Hebrews 1:3

In human affairs, the “right hand” is the symbol of strength and power. Someone who is said to be the president’s “right hand man” is someone who is in a high position of honor. Thus, Scripture often employs the phrase “sitting at the right hand of the Father” to denote Christ’s preeminence as the one in the highest position of authority.

Maybe Jesus Christ is not the one and almighty God ... but his son! DA..DA!

John 10:31-33

Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

“We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

so basically you’re saying the Book of Mormon can’t support Mormon doctrine in Scripture, or an other arguments against Mormonism?

You know teppe - when you shoot off your mouth - you just end up shooting yourself in the foot.

Athenasus simplify codified the teaching that had been in place over 150 years prior.

Tertullian - LOL, come on teppe, your ignorant claim is easily refuted. Tertullian is one of the earliest documented uses of Trinity -

“Still, in these few quotations the distinction of Persons in the Trinity is clearly set forth. For there is the Spirit Himself who speaks, and the Father to whom He speaks, and the Son of whom He speaks.” (Against Praxeas, IX, (ANF 3:603))

Tertullian speaks pro-trinity, what was Praxeas’ error - modalism.

If ignorance is bliss - you must be feeling pretty blissful teppe.

"Christ himself in modern revelation spoke to Joseph..."

False.

JS never recorded or reported that it was Christ and God.

He used the term PERSONAGES.

I suspect that if you or I saw Jesus and God we would use the term "personages" to describe them?

I seriously doubt it.

Oh, and I can provide one of many truthful and factual examples from official mormon literature and scripture if you don't believe me.
