My mom will be having open heart surgery today and I would appreciate it greatly if you could say a prayer for her. Growing up she, and my (former Marine drill sergeant) dad, instilled great values in all of us. There were 9 of us living in a row home but my dad worked all the overtime he could get to send us to Catholic school. We had to share, lived on brown bag lunches and hand-me-downs, but the atmosphere of love, good manners, and Church involvement made us all feel like we were rich.
Our Mom would make each of our birthdays seem like the most special day of the year. Christmas and Easter were like something from the movies but for us it was just normal. It was the greatest childhood a kid could have. We would sometimes hear comments about being the "Leave it to Beaver" family-but it was something we took as a compliment. My childhood was right out of a Norman Rockwell painting with Church every Sunday and Holy days, family dinners, little league, fishing, trips to the zoo and we played board games and cards together. Sometimes we would just pile in the station wagon and drive-not knowing where we would end up.
The summers lasted forever and we would all pile in a rented rowboat to go crabbing and every year we would go to the beach together. This is a tradition we continued even after the death of my dad (with most of us being married and having our own kids). When people hear that our multiple families with multiple kids all vacation together...in the same rental unit, they think we are crazy.
I just think we are family...thanks to my wonderful Mom and Dad.

A PRAYER FOR THE PATIENT
FACING SURGERY
O God, the source of all health.
Fill my heart with faith.
Be near me in times of weakness and pain. Although I know You are in control, I am apprehensive about what faces me. You made me, loved me, and have provided my surgeon with needed skill to perform a miracle in my behalf. Sustain me by Your grace that my strength and courage may not fail; Heal me according to Your will.
Amen.

What a wonderful family life you had. We matched some of it, but not the fishing and crabbing part.
They can do so much with heart surgery these days. Your mom is in good hands. My prayers are with her and your entire family.
