There is a significant difference:

Protestants adopted a lot of Roman Catholic theology. Theology Proper (existence and nature of God) is very similar. It is mostly in practice and theologies of justification that are different.

Mormons have rejected most of the theology of Catholics and Protestants. Not the least of which is the nature of God - God was not once like us. The Trinity is not even accepted by Mormons. Their "god" is totally unlike the God of Christianity. The idea that a Mormon man can become like Elohim has nothing comparable in Christianity.

Bottom Line: Mormons are not, and will never be, Christians!
