Instead what has happened is they (Roman Catholic church) teach dependence on them (the church). The church becomes the conduit of their salvation. As a result defense of their church becomes the same as defending their faith. And there you have it in a nutshell. Jesus becomes a window dressing at that point; something to give legitimacy to the system of works they have established to replace the Law that God gave.
No system of works, rules, regulations, and ceremonies man sets up in it's place is going to save if the Law God Himself gave doesn't.
