The Doctrine of Temple Work (Mormonism - Open)
Ensign ^ | October 2003 | Elder David E. Sorensen

Posted on 10/26/2010 5:17:20 AM PDT by Colofornian

Snip

...Joseph Smith warned of the consequences when we fail to use the temples available to us: “Those Saints who neglect [temple work] in behalf of their deceased relatives, do it at the peril of their own salvation.”

Snip

A key function of temples is to perform ordinance work for our deceased ancestors. When we think of temple ordinances and the necessity to do them perfectly, without error...

“… For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation...they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect” (D&C 128:5, 15;...).

Consider the...vision of President Joseph F. Smith...:

“Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins...having rejected the prophets.

Snip

The Lord revealed through... Joseph: “All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is anointed, both as well for time and for all eternity, … through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power … are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead” (D&C 132:7).

Snip

...One of the great privileges we have is the wearing of the garment...

...The garment, … when properly worn, will serve as a protection against temptation and evil.

“It is expected that members will wear the garment both night and day...Members should not adjust the garment or wear it contrary to instructions in order to accommodate different styles of clothing...The garment should not be removed for activities which might reasonably be done with the garment worn beneath the clothing...

“No... but then I do not have “doctrinal differences” with mormonism.

“You don’t?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I used quote marks for a reason - it was to point out that
by using the term “doctrinal differences”, you make is sound
as if we just see some minor things in the Bible differently. I see other mormons on FR try this same tactic.
Mormonism is in conflict with the Bible, which teaches
there is ONE GOD. It is the premise of God’s identity He
first reveals to Israel, in contrast to every other
henotheistic religion surrounding them (mormons are also
henotheistic).
Israel did not have “doctrinal differences” with the Moabites Canaanites and Edomites. They all worshiped
different gods.
For example, the Canaanite pantheon of gods consisted two main gods, with an additional 70 sons who supposedly ruled over the nations of the earth - these sons were each worshiped within a specific region.
Mormons have their great pantheon of gods too - an infinite number and believe they can also become gods. While following the Canaanite pattern of henotheism, they claim to worship just one of those gods - one earth god (henotheism) who in turn has a god he worships.
Israel worshiped THE ONE God who told them that besides Him, there is no other God.
I do not have “doctrinal differences” with mormonism. That
minimizes what God said. His nature is not open to debate.
Christianity and mormonism worship different gods.
The Christian God is neither created nor made, but is eternal and alone as God. Chistians do not believe in a Pantheon of Gods. We believe there is ONE GOD.
Just one.
All that to say our differences are not matters of parsing
small things and seeing esoteric doctrines differently. Our
differences are gigantic and go the the very root of the
identity of God and the Gospel of Grace. That supersedes doctrinal differences.
best,
ampu
“I actually am in agreement with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I am happy so why would I want to leave? I don’t get you.”
Ah, but you are in the same boat - having to believe or leave. I heard there was wonderful music on the Titanic too, with lots of celebrating people in ball gowns. So happy to be a part of the voyage.
Don’t feel bad that you don’t “get me”. Not many do :-)
best,
The anti Mormons asked me what I believe so I posted the LDS Articles of Faith. Then the anti’s proceeded to attack, desecrate, spit on, trample, and mangle the Articles of Faith. So I refuse to post them ever again.
Sorry to jump on you. You apparently are an innocent bystander.
Hyperbole much?
Are we supposed to believe that the AoF are now equal to “holy quran” [spit]?
That if an “infidel” even breathes the words “Articles of Faith” or tries discuss them or to threaten to burn them is “desecration”?
No, my salvation depends on the Infinite Atoning Sacrifice of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
What the anti Mormons did to the LDS Articles of Faith on this site was a disgrace. That’s why I won’t ever post them here again.
And what, exactly, was it that they did, that was so “disgraceful”?
Oh, so you do have doctrinal differences with Mormonism. The differences may be huge, as you say; but they are differences. Why not just say so?
Note that I did not accuse you of lying when you said something that appears to be untrue. Instead, I gave you an opportunity to explain yourself.
One more thing: You say that the nature of God is not open to debate. However, good Christians can and do disagree on many things, including the nature of God.
BTW, Mormonism does not teach that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are "created beings." Because we do not believe in creation ex nihilo, terms such as created being, necessary being, contingent being, etc. are foreign to our doctrine. So, according to your criterion, are you lying about us?
Mormon doctrine talks a lot about 'creating'. On the LDS website under Gospel topics - Jesus Christ, He is described as the "Creator". How can He be a creator if he didn't 'create' anything logos?
Encyclopedia of Mormonism states that " God the Father, created this and other worlds. . "
In a 1909 statement by the First Presidency entitled "The Origin of Man," where four essential points are made: (1) God created humans (Gen. 1:27-28); (2) God created Adam, "the origin of the human family" and "the first man"; (3) creation was sequential: first spiritual, later physical; and (4) each human body displays the characteristics of the individual premortal spirit that inhabits it." Encyclopedia of Mormonism. Again logos - "created".
I could go on logos, the point is lds teaching is schizophrenic on this point. I know precisely your point - pagan platoism - uncreated 'intelligences' - yet mormon doctrines and teachings overwhelmingly refer to 'creating'. So according to AMPU's criteria, he is not lying - yet by parsing your words you are close to misrepresenting mormon doctrine to the other extent.
So, you are ashamed of this so-called 'gospel' of mormonism then eh SD? Thought you were going to shout it from roof tops?
Are your efforts to earn your salvation going that poorly?
No, my salvation depends on the Infinite Atoning Sacrifice of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Only . . . . by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel (Article of faith #3) - that is only available AFTER you have truly 'repented' of your sins (and by repenting means TOTALLY stopping sinning) (DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS 58:43). And once SD has cleansed herself of ALL ungodliness, only THEN can the can God's grace be effective (MORONI 10:32)
After all that, SD must rely upon her husband for the final call into heaven.
News Flash: try publicly disagreeing with your Prophet and see how long your membership lasts. It will disappear along with your chance at being a breeding goddess for all eternity.
“Oh, so you do have doctrinal differences with Mormonism. The differences may be huge, as you say; but they are differences. Why not just say so?”
Because you have a whole different religion that worships different gods.
“One more thing: You say that the nature of God is not open to debate. However, good Christians can and do disagree on many things, including the nature of God.”
Christians do not disagree about the revealed nature of God.
Mormons are not Christians since they deny the nature of
the Christian God and change it into a creature.
That still does not negate the FACT (according to mormon doctrine) that he has the option NOT to call you through the veil. I don't doubt your love for him - but does he love you enough to call you through SD? Guess what else SD - you may have to share him with sister wives - as mormon doctrine makes clear that polygamy is still good to go in the celestial, but not here on earth.
