>>I think youre taking him too literally. A 10% tithe is old testament law. Under the grace of Christ, were free to give whatever we can afford to the work of the church, be it 1%, 5%, 10% or more.
The issue he raises is a good one - if you dont believe enough in the work of your denomination/congregation to support it to one degree or another...why go?<<
This nails it. Tithing is strictly an “old testament” thing. Even look at what Jesus had to say about it.
GIVING, on the other hand, is VERY Christian. And it is not a specific percentage. The rule of thumb is, if it is not sacrifice, it is not enough.
Really? According to whom?
Is that based on a quote from the Gospel of St. Marx? "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
My pastor gave a sermon in which he quoted something in the Bible (I’m ashamed I can’t remember where it is) that said you should give 3 goats but if you only have 2, give 2 and if you only have 1, give 1. But give something. I can do that.
I wish I had a nickel for every sermon I heard about tithing when I was a Baptist and a Pentecostal. I’d be rich. But I have never had a problem with tithing. It’s a Biblical principle. At least that’s what I always thought. Some folks on FR get all bent out of shape over it and one poster said that the Old Testament teaching is not in effect anymore but was superseded by the New Testament so there’s no real reason to tithe.
I don’t believe that at all. My Church does not pass the plate on Sundays but we tithe privately. It is something we want to do. It’s part of being a Christian. I think tithing is a privilege.
Yup; I've heard this; but just WHERE is it to be found in the NT?
