I think in childhood, given Mother’s perspective . . . I was afraid of being mercilessly attacked by demonic hoards if I got near an RC building.

Later in life I discovered that some seem to be dark horrific nests of such, all right, and others have some degree of light and life in them. I’m not sure what all contributes to such significant localized differences. Perhaps it’s the long term influences of a leader who’s more authentically focused on God vs those who are focused on the idolatries and blasphemies.

You do realise that the demonic hordes would not have wanted you to find God, hence they would have liked to prevent you from ever entering a Church and discovering Christ in His Church?

The demonic hordes attack those they fear will work for Christ. Hence the attacks on the saints etc.

you should not have feared their attacks to prevent you from entering a Catholic church -- the attacks could be swept aside by calling out to Our Lord. Once you enter Christ's bosom in His Church, you will find the spiritual safety you seek
