Priests are a gift from the Heart of Christ, Pope Benedict says
CNA ^ | 6/13/2010

Vatican City, Jun 13, 2010 / 10:58 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Thousands of pilgrims and faithful gathered at noon Sunday in St. Peter’s Square to pray the Angelus with the Holy Father. Before the prayer, he said that the fruits of the recently ended Year for Priests could never be measured, but are already visible and will continue to be ever more so.

“The priest is a gift from the heart of Christ, a gift for the Church and for the world. From the heart of the Son of God, overflowing with love, all the goods of the Church spring forth,” proclaimed Pope Benedict XVI. “One of those goods is the vocations of those men who, conquered by the Lord Jesus, leave everything behind to dedicate themselves completely to the Christian community, following the example of the Good Shepherd.”

The Holy Father described the priest as having been formed by “the same charity of Christ, that love which compelled him to give his life for his friends and to forgive his enemies.”

“Therefore,” he continued, “priests are the primary builders of the civilization of love.”

Benedict XVI exhorted priests to always seek the intercession of St. John Marie Vianney, whose prayer, the “Act of Love,” was prayed frequently during the Year for Priests, and “continues to fuel our dialogue with God.”

The pontiff also spoke about the close of the Year for Priests, which took place this past week and culminated with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He emphasized “the unforgettable days in the presence of more than 15,000 priests from around the world.”

The feast of the Sacred Heart is traditionally a “day of priestly holiness,” but this time it was especially so, Benedict XVI remarked.

Pope Benedict concluded his comments by noting that, in contemplating history, “one observes so many pages of authentic social and spiritual renewal which have been written by the decisive contribution of Catholic priests.” These were inspired “only by their passion for the Gospel and for mankind, for his true civil and religious freedom.”

“So many initiatives that promote the entire human being have begun with the intuition of a priestly heart,” he exclaimed.

The Pope then prayed the Angelus, greeted those present in various languages, and imparted his apostolic blessing.

BTW, the notion that we can have no sense of security in our Salvation delivered by the Blood of Jesus smacks me as a huge insult to Christ’s Blood and to our Salvation through that Blood.

However, I’ll leave it to the Calvinists to talk about the SECURITY of our Salvation in Christ.

Since the Cross accounts for nothing in such a theology, it isn’t surprising that one has to hope to remain in fellowship for a further judgment in order to receive salvation, but Christ has indeed provided a much more robust of a redemption, finished forevermore, not requiring any further work for it to qualify for the full redemption of all sin in all mankind.

It is simply for man to turn to God, through faith in Him for forgiveness of sins, then God is free to provide salvation to the believer by His grace. Do you find God to be further encumbered? Unable to provide grace in eternal live to the believer until after even more faith and good works are performed to make Him a debtor?

You don't have to be a "Calvinist" to believe in our eternal security in Christ. We are saved by grace through faith not will be, may be, hope to be.

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 John 5:10-13
Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

For example, a Jewish law said that one is obligated to circumcise his children. That is a work of law, in this case Hebrew law, that is not salvific for that very reason

Using your logic then, since Jewish/Hebrew law included the Ten Commandments, we can worship false gods, use the name of God in vain, dishonor our parents, steal, murder, commit adultery, etc., but as long as we do "works of love" we can be saved???

The the counterscriptural heresy is with that kind of thinking, my FRiend.

Catholics believe in the inerrancy of the Bible.

“Course you do...You just don’t have a clue as to what it says”

Sure, we can read and other marvelous things. “You” have statistical deficiencies in said area.

"You know it means something but it's all an allegory and you don't know what it means..."

Don't expect the truth, respect or even Christian behavior from the anti-Catholics on FR. Protestantism has collectively decided than only the elect can determine the meaning of scripture and determine what constitutes the revealed word of God and what doesn't. Even though there are over 33,000 versions of the correct meaning, one for each denomination based upon the agenda of its alter-pontiff founder's aspirations, they deny that Catholics have that ability.

That is because Protestantism's founding identity is based upon its opposition to the object of its protest; Catholicism. Admitting any theological validity to Catholics and Catholicism is an admission of their error.

Thank you for sharing your insights, dear brother in Christ!

Of the Scriptures mentioned in annalex’ post, I’d like to underscore two from the Sermon on the Mount. The first is that the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees is inadequate:

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:20

And the second reveals the “bar” – what is expected of us (emphasis mine:)

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so?

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. - Matthew 5:43-48

We are to “be” perfect as our Father in Heaven “is” perfect.

This seems like an impossibility because the natural man is incapable of saying perfect words, thinking perfect thoughts and doing perfect things.

The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it? – Jer 17:9

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: - Romans 3:10

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all. – James 2:10

But it is possible to “be” perfect. Not by any effort of our own, but by abiding in Christ Who IS perfect.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every [branch] that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. - John 15:1-5

And again,

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. - Colossians 3:3

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20

The passage begins with the great challenge of truly loving our enemies.

God is love and love is the first fruit of the indwelling Spirit.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. - Galatians 5:22-23

We love him, because he first loved us. – I John 4:19

And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. – I John 4:16

It is not that the Christian is perfect but that Christ is perfect.

To God be the glory, not man, never man!

Thanks

for your PURE, ACCURATE, FITTING, APPROPOS

BIBLICAL SCRIPTURES AND TRUTHS

AS USUAL.

It still boggles me that anyone could read into any of those verses the least bit of ANY SALVATION BY WORKS OUT OF ANY MOTIVE WHATSOEVER.

However, given some of the givens, I shouldn’t be all that surprised. Sigh.

Dr E., Alex, hasn't this been shown to be extremely inaccurate?

Not that inaccuracies and brazen falsehoods seem to be uncomfortable for the rabid clique types to use.
