Priests are a gift from the Heart of Christ, Pope Benedict says

Vatican City, Jun 13, 2010 / 10:58 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Thousands of pilgrims and faithful gathered at noon Sunday in St. Peter’s Square to pray the Angelus with the Holy Father. Before the prayer, he said that the fruits of the recently ended Year for Priests could never be measured, but are already visible and will continue to be ever more so.

“The priest is a gift from the heart of Christ, a gift for the Church and for the world. From the heart of the Son of God, overflowing with love, all the goods of the Church spring forth,” proclaimed Pope Benedict XVI. “One of those goods is the vocations of those men who, conquered by the Lord Jesus, leave everything behind to dedicate themselves completely to the Christian community, following the example of the Good Shepherd.”

The Holy Father described the priest as having been formed by “the same charity of Christ, that love which compelled him to give his life for his friends and to forgive his enemies.”

“Therefore,” he continued, “priests are the primary builders of the civilization of love.”

Benedict XVI exhorted priests to always seek the intercession of St. John Marie Vianney, whose prayer, the “Act of Love,” was prayed frequently during the Year for Priests, and “continues to fuel our dialogue with God.”

The pontiff also spoke about the close of the Year for Priests, which took place this past week and culminated with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He emphasized “the unforgettable days in the presence of more than 15,000 priests from around the world.”

The feast of the Sacred Heart is traditionally a “day of priestly holiness,” but this time it was especially so, Benedict XVI remarked.

Pope Benedict concluded his comments by noting that, in contemplating history, “one observes so many pages of authentic social and spiritual renewal which have been written by the decisive contribution of Catholic priests.” These were inspired “only by their passion for the Gospel and for mankind, for his true civil and religious freedom.”

“So many initiatives that promote the entire human being have begun with the intuition of a priestly heart,” he exclaimed.

The Pope then prayed the Angelus, greeted those present in various languages, and imparted his apostolic blessing.

Please name them and post their writings

How about Jesus, will his words do?

Luke 16:22-31

22"Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.

23"In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.

24"And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.'

25"But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.

26'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'

27"And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father's house--

28for I have five brothers--in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

29"But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.'

30"But he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!'

31"But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'"

No my conclusion comes as one that has read the scriptures many times and has taken time to look into the history and the language ...

When someone who has done the same speaks I listen, when someone who has not speaks I dismiss it

We, the Holy Catholic Church ARE Israel and we are doing just fine.

Well that sure answers a lot of questions. It explains why your church wants control of Jerusalem and sides with the Arabs.

Sooooo, REPLACEMENTARIANS et al are doing well within the Vatican edifice. What a surprise. Not!

I don't consider you a scholar at all on this topic of language. I have read Robert Kraft from UPENN and others as wells and don't toot my horn like you do

There are many others here on FR who know more than you. Kosta 50 is one

Will you please make up your mind? One day it's the "Gospels" are what you place your faith in because the words of Jesus are more important than the words of Paul. The next day, it's no, Jesus didn't tell the writers of the "gospels" what to write. No wonder there is so much confusion in your religion and why discussing anything is next to impossible. "Like nailing jello to the wall." is a very apt metaphor.

Gamecock, is this a good one for your list?

You must have me confused with some one else?

Traditions came first the Gospels came after Christ’s death. The early Christians were following traditions of Christ before ANYTHING was written about him

This is a fact, like it or not.

Solo Scripture did not apply to the earliest Christians

Like I said annalex, with rightly dividing the Word of Truth and dispensationalism you always run the risk of learning the key to Bible Scripture. And standing before God unashamed and approved unto Him. I know it’s risky, holding the Word of God. And nothing else. no creed, no traditions, no rosary beads, no eucharist, no confessions to another man, no waiting to see if your sins are remitted or retained.

Saints who we ask intercession

Pray tell why would you ask saints to make intercession when Romans 8:26,27 says "But the Spirit itself maketh intercesion for us with groaning which cannot be uttered". It's the Holy Spirit who intercedes on our behalf.

Tell, me stfassisi, does the following sound familar:

Traditions of the Apostles came first, the Scriptures came next. God gave His Gospel orally first. The Apostles gave it to others orally first. The Scriptures didn't come until AT LEAST ten years later, if we believe that an Aramaic version of Matthew was written in the early 40's. Thus, the first ten years at least saw Christianity spread without any Gospel writings, any Epistles, etc. Later, when these same men of God wrote letters and the narratives of the Gospels, they naturally taught the SAME thing that they taught orally earlier to others. Thus, the oral teachings preceded the written ones, and the written ones did not overturn the oral ones.

I am responding to your post questioning whether the very words of Jesus were contained in the Gospel of Luke. Do you believe that the Holy Spirit inspired the writings of scripture or not? Do you believe Jesus told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would bring to their remembrance all the things he had taught them? If you do, and it sure sounds like you do since the above quote was from YOU, then I cannot see how you can deny the teachings of Christ concerning Hades from Luke 16.

They are waiting for Rome to make a ruling on this, then they will tell you what they think
