Nifonging the Catholic Church
me ^ | April 18, 2010 | vanity

Posted on 04/18/2010 9:49:35 PM PDT by Judith Anne

I seriously wonder about some FReepers, sometimes. Any other person accused of a crime would be defended by every FReeper as being innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. I've seen whole threads written by men who have been accused of child abuse by ex-wives out to deny them their visitation rights or to wrest more money out of them. These men are rightly indignant, and furious about the unjust accusations that cannot be proven but are never withdrawn.

Yet where are those FReepers when a PRIEST is accused? Where is the presumption of innocence? Suddenly, every accusation becomes a verdict, and not only the accused but his entire organization and all its adherents are held responsible.

I can only wonder what some of these so-called conservatives (who so faithfully defend the Constitution) would do, if THEY were the ones accused! It is a nightmare for any man -- all of you know how even the accusation stains the man forever, even if it is proven false!

Not only that, many here assert that the problems of 30, 40 and even 50 years ago must be tried in the media TODAY!

Remember the Duke rape case? There are more similarities than differences here. The priests are accused, nifonged, and instead of being defended, they are vilified!

What other man of you could stand under the weight of such an accusation trumpeted by the press, and come out whole? None! And such accusations made, LONG after the statute of limitations has passed, sometimes even after the accused is dead and buried for YEARS -- are YOU one of those who automatically, reflexively, spitefully, and gleefully act as judge, jury, and executioner?

Women! What if it were YOUR HUSBAND, YOUR BROTHER, YOUR FATHER, YOUR UNCLE, YOUR SON who was accused? Wouldn't you want the best defense possible? Wouldn't YOU believe in their innocence? Wouldn't YOU help protect your loved ones as much as possible? And yet, YOU JUDGE THE CHURCH FOR DOING WHAT YOU WOULD DO?

Shame! Vast shame! On all who have sinned against the innocent!

I don't "like" going to the dentist. That doesn't imply that I don't think it's good to go to the dentist.

When I was in PT I HATED the part where my gorgeous therapist tried to rip my arm out of its socket. But I knew it was good.

Judith Anne may not LIKE St. Paul any more than Luther LIKED st James. But unlike Luther, she acknowledges that St. Paul is authoritative. Yet we are said to not respect Scripture.

To dismiss 1/3 of the NT as the work of a madman is to hurl insults at the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

This thread is not about me. Quit concerning yourself with who I like and don’t like in the Bible.

Mark Bsnr is not my boss. Mark Bsnr cannot tell me what to do. If I do not like St. Paul, Mark Bsnr cannot change my feelings or my opinion. No edict from anyone can force me to like St. Paul.

Your comment breaks the RF rules.

Please point to the verse where I stated that I dismissed 1/3 of the NT, or dismissed the Pauline Epistles.

it is illogical to take the sins of the few or of the one and to apply it to the entire membership and even to the entire organization.

It is not illogical if that organization which is entrusted with protecting its membership knowingly and intentionally commits sins against that membership. Nor is it illogical to include all those in the membership who are aware of those sins who look the other way or deny the sin even took place.

At the very least, all that looking the other way leaves the membership at further risk.

Personally, I don’t even consider it appropriate to take the missteps of the organization and apply them to the membership that stands in opposition to the misstep.

That assumes the membership stands in opposition to the misstep. From the vast majority of responses here on FR to the pederast priest scandal, many many members of that organization do not "stand in opposition," but deny the error even exists.

While it is true that, as my dad used to say, "we did not ALL kill Kennedy," (a line by the idiot talking heads of that time) it is equally true that somebody killed Kennedy.

Then please stop telling us who you like and don't like in the Bible.

Actually that grotesque statement was to be expected, considering the source.

Trivia: St. Peter converted the first Gentile. Extra points if you can find chapter and verse...

FWIW, I always reccomend Galatians after John. The first time I read Romans it was tough!

Good order. I also really like Colossians 1. My eyes were opened when I first read...

"(Jesus Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist." -- Colossians 1:15-17

That's Trinitarian Calvinism right there.

I agree with that. Even the pope agrees with that; he lamented the awful thing done to them when he met with many of them someplace or other recently.

If there are those denying that the sin took place, then they probably also are looking for a UFO to come take them away real soon.

I repeat, though, the crimes of a member or of a minister are no more the crimes of the remaining members any more than an individual crime by a soldier indicts the entire military.

Catholicism and Catholics use capitals to show respect for others. Perhaps you are unused to that convention.

If Paul was instructed to bring the Good News to the Gentiles by God, why did he spend most of his first missionary journey preaching to the Jews and why was Peter the first Bishop of Rome?

Well said.

God still works wonders. The longer I live the more I hear to support my trust in Him.

A young man confided in me that, he took the name Peregrine at his reception and confirmation into the Church this Easter.

AND, he confided that he had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. And he had had an MRO after Easter and he was CLEAN!

The CHurch is messy. We mess up a LOT! But God keeps on coming through for his children, Catholic or not.

We have plenty to grieve for. But still we can rejoice forever in the greatness and the Love of God.

The point is, x, that this particular hierarchy is riddled with this kind of sin which destroys children, families and faith.

Do members have a responsibility to leave a church that destroys its children?
