Is it "Catholic" or "Roman Catholic?" <Vanity><Ecumenical>

Posted on 02/26/2010 1:08:31 AM PST by Gamecock

So I have a question about terminology.

Some of our Catholic FRiends get upset when we Prods use the term Roman Catholic, insisting that the term is derogatory, insulting, etc.

What I would like to discuss is why do Catholics complain about the term Roman Catholic, when the term is in such wide use inside of the Catholic church?

Thoughts?

My son was molested for four years by a Catholic boy near us and we never knew about it.

First of all, I want to preface this by saying that it is terribly sad what your son and your family went through, and I hope all has resolved.

But what has the fact that the boy may have been Catholic have anything to do with him molesting your son? You are not suggesting that the Catholic laity has greater proclivity to sexual deviancy than Protestants?

Perhaps that she means that we Catholic boys, so many of us having been molested by all of the "many pedophile" priests, are simply acting out due to the horrific experiences we endured.

The Reformed are desperate now; their numbers are dwindling and the children of the Reformed are abandoning Calvinism in droves. I look for a last ditch effort shortly:

Ah. That is the inference. I knew it was something nefarious.

The question then is why would any parent entrust the lives and safety of their children to any priest, a man who abstains from a normal, functional life to live sequestered with other men, many of whom are pedophiles?

Well, why you would entrust your children to protestant churches when they have staggering rates of child molestation per their own insurance companies? Or did you just ignore this when I posted it before?

I try to monitor the Religion Forum closely, but I'm not here 24/7 and I don't do "curb service."

If you don't get a quick response to your ping, I'm probably off doing something else. So send a Freepmail. Or, if it's an emergency, file an abuse report.

But don't file multiple abuse reports. Moderators also get annoyed by repetition.

That he did acknowledge the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, in the preamble and then chapter 3.

Are we still talking about Ignatius? That he would acknowledge the "primacy of the Bishop of Rome" would have meant he had some kind of ESP since that would not be true until 270 or so years in the future.

I checked your posts before I sent the second ping to see if you’d been on since I’d sent the first. You had been and didn’t reply to mine after 24 hours, so I assumed in charity that you had overlooked my ping.

Next time I’ll freepmail you to alert you to a ping I think you may have overlooked. I wasn’tlooking for “curb service.” Just looking for a simple reply.

Thank god my experience growing up and being educated in the Catholic church, as well as the experience of the many others who shared that experience with me, bears so little resemblance to the outrageous image you have.

God bless you. You speak for many of us.

It was probably Monday. I had unexpected company until late Tuesday and it has taken several days to catch up. Other moderators take up the slack when life happens to any of us, but they may punt on Religion Forum misdemeanors, e.g. what is or is not “making it personal” or “antagonism.”

Do you even read the links you post?

While thousands of accusations against pedophile priests have been lodged, the article says that "Protestant churches in America say they typically receive upward of 260 reports each year of young people under 18 being sexually abused by clergy, church staff, volunteers or congregation members.

Did you catch that? The accusations made against Protestants included "church staff, volunteers and members of the congregation."

Unlike in the Roman Catholic church, where the horrendous statistics speak against the sins of the priestcraft alone. The guys who think of themselves as "another Christ."

That’s terrible, Mary. I hope he’s recovered. It’s a dangerous world out there, isn’t it? Especially for children.

But I consider the question relative. So we disagree.

It's interesting, however, that you're keeping this up even after the Religion Moderator took us both to task for continuing.

Why not do as the RM suggests?

But I consider the question relative. So we disagree.

It wasn't the question that was the problem. It was your repetition of it that was the problem. Thankfully, that's been addressed.

It's interesting, however, that you're keeping this up even after the Religion Moderator took us both to task for continuing.

On the contrary, I was taken to task for pinging the mod too many times. In responding to your last post, I'm simply answering your comment to me. As long as you post to me and I am interested in replying, I'll do so, unless I'm told not to by the mod.

The reason I was interested in replying was because I wanted to be sure that it was clear that I don't consider asking if I have children to be a hostile question, in case you've misunderstood my point.

Why not do as the RM suggests?

If the RM is the one doing the suggesting, of course I'll listen. As long as I'm interested and able to address deficiencies of information on this thread within the parameters of the forum rules, I'll do so. If you'll recall, I asked to stick to the discussion at hand quite a few posts back. If we never get back to that topic, namely the incorrect information given by you regarding Church documents, I'll lose interest for sure...which ought to make at least a few people happy.
