So I have a question about terminology.
Some of our Catholic FRiends get upset when we Prods use the term Roman Catholic, insisting that the term is derogatory, insulting, etc.
What I would like to discuss is why do Catholics complain about the term Roman Catholic, when the term is in such wide use inside of the Catholic church?
Thoughts?
Ah, I had thought you were peddling another "fact" (like the innumerable number of Protestant denominations "fact" and the East German Stasi had its origin in Calvin's Geneva "fact" that show up on Religion threads).
Beginning in the 1930's the left, lead by the Nazi's, has had an organized campaign to undermine the moral authority of the Catholic Church by a series of public accusations and so-called Immorality Trials" in an effort to link pedophilia and sexual misconduct with Catholic Clergy in the public mind. Too many, with a traditional hatred or distrust of the Catholic Church are too quick to grab onto this and perform the role of the "useful idiot" for the left. I am just making sure that the truth be known.
"Truth be known"? What truth? Be specific.
I agree that anti-RC bigotry exists, in the U.S. and elsewhere, and that it has a long history. However, I fail to see the need to frame these matters in terms of conspiracies, whether it be a Nazi, or a Leftist, or a Freemason, or an "it's da Jooooz" plot. I've found that conspiracy theories are almost always nonsensical and false. Not to mention the fact that those tin-foil hats make my scalp itch.
Also, it should be pretty obvious that there's no need to organize a propaganda campaign from the outside to destroy the moral authority of the RC Church -- such as it is -- given the fact that so many RC Churchmen seem to be literally Hellbent upon destroying it from the inside, either through their own atrocious behavior or their unwillingness to discipline their brothers DESPITE the existence (for several decades) of clear rules and protocols for dealing with matters such as child abuse.
Traditions, negative and positive, don't NEED conspiracies or cabals to exist or to survive. They have a life of their own.
By blaming a Leftist, or Lutheran, or Nazi, or somesuch plot for the misfortunes of the RCC you are just scapegoating and conspiracy mongering. I'd argue that such scapegoating is dangerous for RCs and others because it reproduces the same bad habits of thought which have been used to target RCs for bigoted (and even violent) attacks over the centuries. Such scapegoating poisons the public square, and makes it more likely that what comes around will get around.
Just to be clear (who do I sound like?)... it isn’t “error” it’s SIN, regardless of who does it.
Ping to 278.
I wouldn't go there if I were you...oops, too late, you did. I like butter and light salt on my popcorn, thank you.
Oh, yes, I did see that. I wonder how long his superiors allowed his crimes to continue, before taking action?
Nice try, but any Protestant problem is dwarfed by the sexual abuse of priests.
lol. Amen. That seems to be their pattern.
Those complaints made it to the insurers, so it wasn’t a matter of simple gossip, it was complaints.
And remember, those are the tip of the iceberg. For ONE YEAR.
lol. Yeah, this is a guy I'm going to trust. Especially his article, "The Myth of the Pedophile Priest."
When Roman Catholic priests sin, they are shuffled off to another unsuspecting parish where the abuse continues for decades.
260 complaints in ONE YEAR, against protestant church workers for abuse of children under 18. Tip of the iceburg.
One year. Under 18. Doesn’t count the number of complaints about church workers and regular adult church members.
Keep trying to equate what cannot be compared.
Oh, right, the police are notified. Like that Lutheran pastor, mentioned above, who had one multimillion dollar judgement after another. How many times was he reported to the police? How long did his abuse continue?
260 complaints in ONE YEAR. Tip of the iceburg. Ministers, Choir directors, youth ministers, office workers, janitors and volunteers. Acts against children under 18.
How many children did the Lutheran minister in Texas molest? How many times were the police called? Why were two multimillion dollar judgments by a JURY granted?
Unlike most of the thousands of pedophile priests who are silently shuffled off to other unsuspecting parishes where they can commit their sins against children again and again.
I'm always taken aback by Roman Catholics who deny this glaring problem in their church. It is epidemic. A celibate priesthood draws a certain kind of man to it. It doesn't take a PH.D. to know that. Just a little common sense and some observation skills.
When you can find a letter from Protestant clergy urging secrecy and expulsion/excommunication for anyone who speaks about sexual abuse with anyone outside of church authorities, as Ratzinger sent to every Roman Catholic bishop, you let me know.
Yep. You’ve got ONE really nasty case there. One.
One unbalanced, biased, bigoted view begets others.
In the authoritative work by Penn State professor Philip Jenkins, Pedophiles and Priests*, it was determined that between .2 and 1.7 percent of priests are pedophiles. The figure among the Protestant clergy ranges between 2 and 3 percent. The reports of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior between Protestant clergy and adults is significantly higher.

I saw that earlier when you first posted it. Apparently, I was the only one who read it. *sigh*
