Is it "Catholic" or "Roman Catholic?" <Vanity><Ecumenical>

So I have a question about terminology.

Some of our Catholic FRiends get upset when we Prods use the term Roman Catholic, insisting that the term is derogatory, insulting, etc.

What I would like to discuss is why do Catholics complain about the term Roman Catholic, when the term is in such wide use inside of the Catholic church?

You're (we're) supposed to be all about hate - hate for the Church, hate for the Church members, hate for the Church history, etc., etc. How else are they supposed to proclaim they are the only true church when no one persecutes them??? I’ve brought this up several times on these kinds of reads.

In Asia (we have labored in northern Asia, central, and the Philippines; our eldest son who is a linguist also has labored independently in Mongolia and elsewhere), there is still this “good luck/bad luck,” “good omen/bad omen” concenpt in the mind. We approach it every day when presenting the Gospel of Christ to people.

Asians will add deities for “luck.” Buddha on the shelf, and add Mary to the shelf, and in the Philippines a “Santo Nino.” In the Philippines it is no exaggeration to say that this is the practice of millions of Eucharist-receiving Catholics.

No, actually it always meant the Catholic Church and just the Catholic Church.

I'm sure I don't need to give YOU a history lesson, but the word "catholic" is derived from a Greek word meaning universal. Ignatius of Antioch's (around 106 AD) letter to the Christians at Smyrna is the first known use of the term and, oddly, there was NO (capital C) Catholic Church then. He actually meant all the true members of the body of Christ. Go figure!!!
