Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

Hah! I used to be nearly, and then I had surgery. Now I’m 20/20 in my good eye, 20/40 in the not so good one! Now I can ping to myself anytime I want. ;-D

Anyway, I hesitate to bring up Immaculate Conception to the Machenites. It would make their heads explode, because they have a teeny tiny god in a box that is not omnipotent. It drives them to worship Paul, who was not even one of the eleven faithful disciples....

Here’s the St. Michael prayer:

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be thou our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, o prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell satan, and all the evil spirits which prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls.

Mark, didn’t you once post a longer form of this prayer on this thread?

Anyway, I have to leave for the store. We’ve had 4 inches of snow, and more to come, so I need to stock up. Little old ladies needn’t drive on icy roads.

Protestant Protestantism in the strict sense of the word is the group of princes and imperial cities who, at the diet of Speyer in 1529, signed a protestation against the Edict of Worms which forbade the Lutheran teachings within the Holy Roman Empire.

This from the failed Catholic who cannot even state the simple name of the Church without making it a slur.. *sigh*

Actually Baptists are not Protestants and most Baptists will tell you that straight up

Some say they existed before the reformation ( the trail of blood folks) . However because many of the early baptists shared reformed doctrine they could be loosely called protestants, but most still prefer the term reformed Baptist or particular baptist over protestants

The “benefits”? We don’t propitiate God just for “benefits”, we follow His command to “do this in memory of Me”

The Law of the Gospel "fulfills," refines, surpasses, and leads the Old Law to its perfection. In the Beatitudes, the New Law fulfills the divine promises by elevating and orienting them toward the "kingdom of heaven." It is addressed to those open to accepting this new hope with faith - the poor, the humble, the afflicted, the pure of heart, those persecuted on account of Christ and so marks out the surprising ways of the Kingdom.

Bless You for writing this,Dear NL. The OT IS revealed in the NT

No. Mark was written originally in Aramaic. Matthew too. Luke and John were in Greek — I don’t know about the Epistles, but assume they were in Greek or Latin and am very unsure about Revelation, I’ll have to check that up for you

“denying the work of the Holy Spirit and instead assigning that work to Mary”

I have not really spent much time studying this but does anyone know what if anything of Mary survived the tomb when Jesus died?

Please do not use my first name, familiar. This discussion is about apologetics, not people. Anyone can be anyone behind a screen name, and I do not wish to be stalked by someone who hides behind an impersonal handle.

"The word has a definition, Catholics do not get to redefine it.. PROTESTANT."

Will you then concede that you do not get to redefine Catholic and Catholicism?

Wag: You see, the argument falls apart when you remove its illicit nature. Let's try this one: "Your honor, as the evidence clearly shows, the milk maid merely obtained the milk, the cow dispensed it."

FK: But you leave out a key piece to the puzzle. What did the milk maid do with the milk when she obtained it? Did she give it to someone to drink? If she did that is as good as dispensing it,

That is illogical -- if the milkmaid gave the milk to someone to drink, that's as good as saying she provided the milk herself?

We don't drink milk from milk maids's ahem... teats.

The inference you make is incorrect.

Mark, didn’t you once post a longer form of this prayer on this thread?

Don't remember, but I have posted it on religious forums before. http://www.traditioninaction.org/religious/b009rpMichael.htm:

“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan.

“Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity.

“These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be.

“Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers.
R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered the root of David.
V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord.
R. As we have hoped in Thee.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us pray.
O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as supplicants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious St. Michael the Archangel, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all the other unclean spirits who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Amen.”

Anyway, I hesitate to bring up Immaculate Conception to the Machenites. It would make their heads explode, because they have a teeny tiny god in a box that is not omnipotent.

They have a god that they have constructed from the image that they see in the mirror and in their navels that they keep on the hall stand and rub his head for luck when they walk by.

Like this example... Mother Teresa took care of the poor and DISPENSED food, clothing and love but always gave credit to God for OBTAINING the food, clothing and love for them, thus,Mother Teresa was an instrument of God.

This is a good example of my objection. For here, what is the name that a poor person should think of first if he seeks food? Mother Teresa. Likewise, those who seek grace should think of Mary first because SHE is the one who dispenses the grace. Undoubtedly, thanks is given to Mary, thus once again glorifying Mary at the expense of God.

“Protestant Protestantism in the strict sense of the word is the group of princes and imperial cities who, at the diet of Speyer in 1529, signed a protestation against the Edict of Worms which forbade the Lutheran teachings within the Holy Roman Empire...Arminian churches were not there”

Neither was Calvin. His first argument against the Catholic Church was published in 1533.

Lady, if you ain’t Lutheran, you ain’t a Protestant!
