Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

This is an honest question about the Catholics...Is it or is it not true that where the Roman Catholics tend to become the dominant spiritual influence in a country (Mexico (89%), Venezuela (92%), Cuba (dominant) , Italy ‘Andreotti’ (87.8%), etc.) the country decays into a gangland controlled disaster?

"There is no place for superstition, idolatry, magick, etc"

Like the St. Peter amulet people bury to help them find lost items? That is just creepy.

Never heard of that one. Deeper issues is the idea of the material bread representing the loaf, becoming magical.

I wonder what the Catholic response would be if two hungry men entered their church building and ate up a bag of consecrated wafers.

Now now.

“Creepy”

is OWNED, MONOPOLIZED, !!!!CONTROLLED!!!! trademarked and otherwise

for the EXCLUSIVE use of

the rabid finger frothing clique components of the

Vatican Affiliates/ Papal submissives/ Roman Catholics/ Papists/

hereon . . .

and as I understand it . . .

Their policy manual in the use of “Creepy”

REQUIRES

that they must use it applying it to me or my posts 80% of the time and 20% of the time to Dr. E and her posts.

Perhaps an updated edition of that manual has it a bit differently but that’s the last understanding I have.

So, stand yourself corrected! Harumph!

They’d probably faint dead away . . . or wander around aimlessly encased in terminal prissy-ness and great angst.

Then they’d rush to shred from their Bibles all mention of David and the Shew bread.

Viet Nam was largely Catholic, and Catholics are oppressed there now. Mexico is weird because they were martyring Catholics 100 years ago.

From the little I know, the Church in Mexico is a disgrace. Judging by what we heard from the legal migrant workers here, The hierarchy is slothful and avaricious. Then there are places like France which had a couple of bloody persecutions of Catholics and now has empty buildings.

I think the hard thing is assigning cause, but it certainly appears that you can make a case and that we have some splainin’ to do.

Catholicism in Poland seems to have been clearly a force for good recently. On the other hand Spain seems to have flowed or puddled into a limp European liberalism.

It's interesting and troubling.

INDEED. . . . DITTO for any large and/or old Christian organization.

NO INSTITUTION

is big enough to ‘contain’ and usually not very fit for very long to even ‘entertain’ God within it’s boundaries very effectively, functionally or meaningfully.

"apparently there was a lot of repetition of the Lord's Prayer alone."

Certainly in my old church!

"As I was growing up in the Episcopal Church it was a common notion that the Psalms were the “Prayer book of the Bible."

Ahhh, that is one of the things I have a problem with. I am in no way stating I am correct (we won't know until I'm standing in front of the Lord). Back to using the Book of Psalms as a prayer book, that is what bugs me. I think a lot of churches do that (which is why I don't like any of them).

I watch a few evangelicals on tv. I always seem to "feel it", like I am part of the congregation and am truly worshiping. I feel the Lord with me. One thing I have noticed is they don't do repetitive prayer and most of the "talking" is coming straight from the Bible. I can follow along too! And the congregation takes notes!!

It just feels less fake to me. If that was offensive, I apologize, but it's the only way I can describe my feelings (I'm pretty bad at it).

I think a lot of churches and organizations have lost their way. I can't point my finger at just one, because I think, well, they kinda all suck.

There is SO MUCH dissent between each religion within itself (how many sects do the Catholics have, the Lutherans, the Protestants, etc...)I can't trust any of them!

The Lord's Prayer is instruction on how to pray. Young( any age) church goers profit from it. We are free to pray it or use it as a guide. Incidently, the Psalms are songs. The Hebrew cantors sing them, more than they chant them as prayers

"Never heard of that one."

Me neither, until this very Catholic lady at work started handing them out to people when they couldn't find something.

I tried to ask her about idols and amulets and how it goes against her Bible teachings. She claims she doesn't take the Bible literally, as most people I have come across, but see them as "stories" to help guide us.

Thank you for that thoughtful answer.

I’m curious. The Reformed perspective sets out that if a man is really rescued by Christ, his life will reflect it, otherwise he is not a believer, no matter what he says or does to make it up(confession/etc.). Correct me if I am wrong, here, but isn’t the Catholic perspective that a man can really do anything (I am exaggerating a bit here), but then come to confession and have the priest grant absolution in exchange for a penance? Maybe I have seen too many Godfather movies, but didn’t the Pope bless Don Cordeleone? Isn’t that how the Mafia and other criminals carry on as they do and then come to mass/confession? Isn’t that how the Dems do their evil abortion work and then go to confession?
