Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

Men "receive" the gift of the Holy Spirit. Passive. They don't "accept" it. Active.

Therein is the difference between a works-based salvation and salvation by God's free, merciful gift of grace to whom He will.

I miss beefsteak tomatoes. Out here they have these round red things that taste like a wet sponge.

I don't think they're grown. I think they're hatched.

I think there’s SOME merit in taking such a stance

to a point.

Beyond that point, it seems very cheeky and snooty, to me.

And where in the Bible does it say sola scriptura? OR for that matter, sola fide?

Are you aware the number of times Roman Catholics call people and websites "liars?"

Ah, you mean like when we saw this which was supposed to be a "Roman Catholic website" but turned out to be a UFO website run by a ex-Jewish mystic called Crystal links?

Don't try moving the goal posts. Was the "Official Vatican approved website" just a BLOG or not?

And, the other links to a VANITY FR post that was positioned as "proof"

You expect us to debate with half or wholly lying "proofs"?

Circles are round.

we ARE on a tangent, but I would point out:
1. Circles are two dimensional -- there is no mention of a 3-D sphere
2. The Bible does NOT tell us that the earth is NOT roud -- even the inference of "east to west" can be taken as a metaphor, not as proof that the Bible said the earth is flat
3. If you stand in the middle of a flat desert and look around, it does look like the earth is one big circl around you
4. Islam, on the other hand, has CLEAR words in the Hadiths that say that the earth is flat. And since it is in the Hadiths, it is haram to say otherwise. This is not true of Christianity, where the Bible doesn't say anything directly about the flatness or non-flatness :) of the earth.

“Ex-Jewish mystics called Crystal” can be Roman Catholic, too.

Why drop the “Dr.” in your almost-exact quote? Afraid the slimey comment is too personal and therefore against the rules of the FR religion forum?

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

Did doc suggest warm saltwater mouth rinses to help with infection and pain? Might help, too. “It has come to pass” ...don’t forget. :o)

so dropping the ‘ckleburg’ is seemingly no biggie....well, it’s as logical as a lot of things here

NO ONE SAID IT WASN'T A BLOG.

What was said is that the Legion of Mary (and its many chapters) are sanctioned by the Vatican.

Which they are, per LOM links offered by FR Roman Catholics.

It's as if we were debating politics and the RCs suddenly started arguing that it's Tuesday. Yeesh.

Hmmm....then aren't the free will people claims that God gave man a free will advocating that they know what is in His secret counsel?

Sorry, no, that is an incorrect statement. God gave us the free will to chooe God or not, He didn't give us any ability to know what HE knows. God has the sovereign power to take away our free will and to basically do anything, but He has given us the ability to choose or reject his grace (the grace is what saves us, not our action, but our action is choosing to accept the grace).

On the contrary, to me it seems that saying "I'm one of the elect" implies that one knows what is in God's secret counsel and it also binds God to a plan (God made the plan and is now slave to it, so predestination doctrine seems to me)
