Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me
Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience
I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?
I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

Rats, I should have added that what some posters around here call "hate" I perceive to be "tough love" - acidic words evidently meant to rebuke a wayward brother but received as contempt. Like a parent telling his child "no" is tough love. Sometimes hate and contempt are, well, just that.

And people say Catholicism is complicated!
No kidding. Protestants say that Catholics venerate images. In reality, though, the veneration of images in protestantism is the veneration of mental images, rationalist flights of fancy such as dispensationalism or calvinism in which someone tries to build a self-consistent structure to connect, coordinate, and explain all the theological details revealed in scripture. In the process they have to invoke the theological equivalent of dark matter to make things fit, wonder at how totally weird and contradictory certain conclusions appear, and then say, well, God's ways are past our understanding.

I choose to think of only the good explanation.
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; - I Cor 13:5
To God be the glory, not man, never man!

One of the reasons the “tough love” analogy fails in my mind is that there is no parent-child relationship in place. It’s one thing if a parent sometimes puts the screws to a child. it’s quite another if someone I odn’t knoiw from Adam decides that he is in a position to act like he’s my parent. It may not be hatred or contempt in that case, but it certainly isn’t very bright and it certainly isn’t going to work.

Maybe your relationship boundaries are
. . . healthier and clearer than mine . . .
I don’t know.
I just know I’ve benefitted immeasureably from folks who brazenly took it upon themselves, for whatever reasons—anointed or arrogant and fleshly—to exhort me or even rant at me very fiercely over a number of issues over a number of years.
Would I have rather been able to change from sweetness wrapped in cotton inside of silk inside of foam rubber and rabbit fur? Of course.
I wasn’t.
One might say there’s precious little of such sweet wisdom around; and that’s true enough. However, there was precious little pure sweetness on the hearing side as well.
I’m infinitely THANKFUL FOR ALL GOD HAS USED to break me and conform me to the image of His Son.
And I’m THANKFUL He’s not finished with me, yet.

I just composed and deleted a post stating the EXACT SAME THING but in a more confused way. It’s patronizing and demeaning, no matter how good the intention may be.

Go to petronski’s homepage where he has a collection of comments that have been made recently. NO RATIONAL PERSON could label those statements as “tough love”; some may deny that they are hateful, but NOBODY would suggest that they are loving in any way.

Or me, I must add.
I once saw a sign on a church that made me laugh, “Christians under construction,” or something like that. Of course we are, always seeking to conform ourselves to His Holy Will.

I think, believe
that we do well to do what we can to grab ourselves by the scruff of the neck and
insist that our flesh conforms to HIS PRIORITIES.
I don’t think, however, the flesh will ever be that good at doing that.
Apart from His Blood and His Spirit CONFORMING US with our ascent TO HIS IMAGE . . . we would be sunk, imho.

I’m seeing a startling amount of duplicity and contradiction in a scant 234 pages of the MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY. I’m only up to page 98 . . . but I’m already amazed.

Not in every case, of course.
I also noted the use of the unmentionable, interestingly.

I googled for both the Jack Chick remark and the "gaggle of streetwalkers" remark using site:freerepublic.com and found neither of them.
Either add links for those quotes or remove them.

Youre wrong. Not in every case, of course.
That means that I'm right. Are some of them less offensive than others? Certainly, but the group of statements can only be taken as hateful.
I also noted the use of the unmentionable, interestingly.
Don't get me wrong, I think the anti-Catholics should be allowed to say whatever they want (I didn't always feel this way, but I've concluded that full disclosure is beneficial) and cite whatever sources they want. If the sources are so offensive as to not be allowed, then it makes more sense to ban the FReeper (this is what would be done if we had someone who was using neo-Nazi sources and agreeing with them).
