Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

We will be Judged on how well we imitated Christ.

What a sad misunderstanding of Christ.

Really? So when Paul says that we are to imitate him as he imitates Christ, it is of no avail? Corinthians 11: 1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. 2 1 I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you.

Not only does the good Dr. E. dismiss the traditions of Jesus, now she dismisses the exhortation to be imitators of Christ.

That blasphemy belongs to Rome and its priestcraft.

The blasphemy of believing wholeheartedly in Christ? Then we are blasphemers in your eyes, Dr. E. We follow Christ, not Machen. We follow God and not men. It is not the Church that misunderstands Christ. It is the OPC and the sad and diminishing little cult that will vanish within a generation. Your precious OPC will not exist as a single congregation when the current bunch of presbyters and other authorities are dead. There will be nobody to take up the positions.

Ping to 4206 in case you did not see it. There is no reason you should have seen it since you were attacked by Natural Law without being pinged.

The object of Christian faith is God the Son, Christ Jesus, not His body the church, the grouping of all believers in Christ.

The Church is not the object of Faith; it is the vehicle. The object of the Faith in God is the attainment of salvation, not only for ones self, but for all mankind. Jesus told us that:

Matthew 22: 34 19 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them [a scholar of the law] 20 tested him by asking, 36 "Teacher, 21 which commandment in the law is the greatest?" 37 He said to him, 22 "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and the first commandment. 39 The second is like it: 23 You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

These are the direct words of Jesus. How can anyone gainsay it?

It goes to the selective judgment exercised. Accepting the contrived views of a single wayward Catholic or faux Catholic as the position of the Catholic Church in order to feel better about one's self and life choices is the only thing that is obvious.

We're not talking some wayward individual here...

So when the sophists among my antagonists take the statements of one Catholic, parlay them into some extravagant nonsense and insist that they are representative of Catholic teaching, I find that maliciously dishonest, unintelligent, or evidence of impaired intellect.

You're wrong on a couple points...These statements come from many, many Catholic sources...

And no one parlay them into some extravagant nonsense...We post 'em as we see 'em...

These priests are responsible for teaching (who knows) how many innocent people out there looking for God...

You guys don't seem to object too loudly what these priests teach...But you sure make the noise when we bring it out in the open...What's up with that???

Yes, I’m sure some died. We know from the bible not all priests performed perfectly.

Yes, in fact soon after Aaron and his four sons were first consecrated as priests to the brand new Tabernacle, two of these priests were killed:

Lev. 10:1-7 1 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said: “ ‘Among those who approach me I will show myself holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.’ ” Aaron remained silent. 4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.” 5 So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered. 6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not let your hair become unkempt, and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, all the house of Israel, may mourn for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. 7 Do not leave the entrance to the Tent of Meeting or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

Yeah, I'll BET they did as Moses said. :) I can't even imagine it. All of Israel had five consecrated priests, one high priest (Aaron) and his four sons. Almost immediately two of them are wiped out. Can't you just see all the other Levites just looking at each other? :)

One of the things that ought to lead us to realize that some of our antagonists are not interested in the truth is that they do not ask us what we believe and then debate that. Instead, they TELL us what we believe, whether we believe it or not, insist that we believe it, and then debate that.

We are constantly asking you guys to tell us what you believe and it's like watching Dancing With the Stars...

You say go find it in our catechism...

And sometimes we do and show you that you are wrong even from your own catechism...

THEN, you tell us we have to follow the footnotes in the catechism to get the real meaning...And then when that fails, you tells us it's in the interpretation...The interpretation of the footnotes...

And of course, you have to be a Catholic to get the right interpretation...

If the Keystone Kops could talk, I'll bet they'd sound like you guys...

And furthermore, we tell you what you believe because Catholics outside of FR post and speak and write what they believe and we can only assume it's a universal belief amongst Catholics...And you guys keep telling us that your religion is completely united...

And when you disagree with your fellow Catholics do you pull out any official paper work that settles the matter??? Of course not...All you do is scream at us for posting something you don't believe and doesn't apply to you...Now THAT is pretty disingenuous...

However, here was a relationship—no—that’s not quite accurate—here was the assummption and the appearance—a fantasy of a relationship wherein mutual earnest effort was being made toward greatly reducing if not eliminating the worst of the hostile and ugly postings back and forth beteen Prottys and Vatican related folks hereon.

Read your words. And then relate that to the hateful and hurtful posts that you have committed to FR over the last 4 or 5 days. I do not think that you acting as the aggrieved party is anything more relevant as Elton John acting as the aggrieved party in a contract dispute at a concert. Review your posted content and tell me (so to speak) to my face that you did not act in a nasty and disrespectful manner before anything that I have posted. Go ahead.

If we have the Bible, why the need for the catechism ?

Why indeed. I wouldn't want to be the guy explaining to God why I was improving on His work. :)

"We're not talking some wayward individual here..."

If said priest, assuming that the citation is valid, is not in complete agreement with the Vatican the priest is wayward.

Unlike the so-called reformed or deviant strains of Christianity the Catholic Church does not leave the interpretation of Scripture and the establishment of dogma up to the self-serving whims of storefront pastors and high school level hermeneutics teachers.

What a sad misunderstanding of Christ.

Ditto that...If we, in the church age, are judged by how well we immitated (Jesus) Christ, we'll all be in Hell...

Just to be clear, we understand that when you say the Church, you mean your Catholic church...

Sorry to disappoint but I have plenty of Faith and I wouldn't ride in your church to the next corner...Your church has zero to do with the Faith of Jesus...

The guy's a priest...Supposedly anointed by God...Why would we assume your priest is wrong especially when you guys refuse to show us in your Catholic documentation that he is wrong???

We're not going to search your catechism to find out which one of you is telling the truth??? That info should be at your fingertips...

Now if there was any of this stuff in the scriptures, we'd be on it like white on rice...

"Your church has zero to do with the Faith of Jesus..."

Only unbridled ignorance would lead one to this conclusion. You obviously know nothing about the Church and your opinion means absolutely nothing until after you have actually read the complete Catechism and discussed any questions or concerns with a qualified Catholic.

When was the last time that you guys showed us something out of the Catechism that was relevant to the subject? Do you have the post?

And when you disagree with your fellow Catholics do you pull out any official paper work that settles the matter??? Of course not...All you do is scream at us for posting something you don't believe and doesn't apply to you...Now THAT is pretty disingenuous...

Bring it on. The official beliefs are posted. If you have found individuals out of step with the Church, then we are grateful to you for bringing it to our attention.

In the letters to the 7 churches in Asia John addressed this matter. Sort of.

Just enough to be beyond the know of the simple, and even more so beyond the know of the brilliant.

I see no just purpose in antagonism.

I wouldn't waste 20 seconds reading your catechism...It is nothing more than a Catholic commentary on God's Holy words and I've heard enough of it from you guys to know that it's an extremely poor commentary at that...

You tell us one must be a qualified Catholic to expound on the Scriptures...And then you tell us one must be a qualified Catholic to understand your catechism...

How an intelligent, educated human being could be duped by statements like that is the real mystery...

"I wouldn't waste 20 seconds reading your catechism..."

That completely disqualifies you from forming a valid opinion on what the Church is or isn't and makes all of your posts on the topic irrelevant.

Bring it on. The official beliefs are posted. The current debate is between Catholics...Whether a priest turns into Jesus Christ or not...Some of you say yes...Some of you say no...

So post the relevant parts of your catechism that settle the matter...
