Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

But it IS the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

You can press your thumbs in your ears and hum Sweet Georgia Brown, but the Catechism of the Catholic Church will continue to be the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Concerning the Predestination v. Free Will debate I would say that both are true

Of course. That is the Catholic teaching.

Repeat after me, there is no free will. There is only God's will and there is man's will.

I am constantly amazed by how many folks exercise their God-given gift of free will to deny that very thing.

Christ hath made us free

Oh, Christ most definitely made us free, past tense. No one is arguing differently.

"we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head” (Hebrews 12:1)."

He doesn't state who these witnesses are. How do you know these are the saints you pray to?

If God wanted us to pray to saints, he would have DELIBERATELY told us to.

Instead He said....John 14:5-12 - Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

It is the Catechism of man. If you choose to follow it, go right ahead.

I am not surprised someone as nasty as you would follow such a thing.

Hebrews 12:1 says “therefore since we are surrounded etc”. Note the “therefore”, referring back to the great witnesses of the faith numerated in chapter 11. They aren’t Gramma and Granpa hovering on clouds

It is the Catechism of man.

If you feel better pretending such, please, go ahead.

Nonetheless it remains the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I am not surprised someone as nasty as you would follow such a thing.

Anyone who refuses to play your sophomoric rhetorical games is nasty, or just me?

I bet you use a redacted Bible, and I know you reject the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

So why would I bother?

"From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: man"

Two Problems with that:

1)While Psalms is poetic and provides excellent contextual information, the entire Old Testament was satisfied and superseded by the death and resurrection of Jesus when ever it conflicts with the New Testament.

2)The Tradition and Catechism of the Catholic Church is not a product of man. Through Apostolic Succession and the every present Holy Spirit it is the word of God by the same authority and same process as compiled the Bible.

You wouldn't because you can't.

We have the Bible. Why the need for the catechism?

"We have the Bible. Why the need for the catechism?"

Since both were produced by the same organization using the same process guided by the same Holy Spirit why limit yourself to volume 1?
