Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

That passage does not say this: “Men are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness...”

There’s much more to it than “Men are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness...”

Boiling it down to “Men are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness...” makes it sound as though the actions of man are not his own.

But Scripture does not deny our God-given gift of free will. Calvin does.

All Christians should be repelled by "superstitions and pagan rituals."

You're not?

At least one Freeper claimed to be the Messiah.

Gotta tell ya, it was a REALLY lonely Caucus thread.

"Yep. Salvation is either partly due to man's own righteous choice, as in synergism, or salvation is all of God from start to finish, as in monergism.

"Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure" -- Isaiah 46:10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been" -- Ecclesiastes 3:15

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth" -- Romans 9:11"

I just had to put this up again. This message is laying all over the pages of the Scriptures. It is the Gospel of Christ that the prophets spoke of long ago. It is the faith of Abraham who did not receive righteousness in a transaction (as wages paid), but as a gift!!! Monergistic rescue of our lost souls...anything else is heresy.

Explain the theology of election to us

Be advised: Any references to 2000 and Broward County, FL will be taken as evidence that you are not taking the question seriously enough.

The nation of Israel was a way for God to implement the plan of salvation. The Israel of the OT was an earthly nation, called out from all nations for God?s purpose. He elects whom to save, potter, clay. His will, not ours. Only spiritual Israel is ever saved, as true then as it?s true now.

Amen!

Does God have free will?

Yes. Analogically speaking, of course, but yes.

Can God sin? Can He violate His Holy Nature?

Thank you for that terrific OT Bible lesson. That’s why I come to the FR religion forum.

Ah, but I am accustomed to reading Scripture.

I'm not accustomed to reading the Institutes or the Westminster Confession.

False traditions of men.

No, I was talking about the Roman Catholic church, headed by Ratzinger and governed by the police state known as the Vatican.

There is no police state known as the Vatican.

The only state known as the Vatican is not a police state.

You’ve been listening to vicious anti-Catholic lies.

Your claim to have learned a thing that is not so may indicate a problem with the epistemology of some Catholics, or there may be another kind of problem

You suggestion that cries of anti-this or anti-that Bigot demonstrate a misunderstandinmg of how to build an argument.

I have been told by non-Catholics within recent weeks that my tag line gives offense as well as ANY use of "Protestant" or "separated brethren".

I do not take offense at questioning any of our doctrines. And after a while I stopped taking offense at many of the bizarre attacks launched at Catholicism because I come to realize that I was dealing with issues that called more for pity than for censure.
