Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

Interesting, and what is your take on Islam and it’s statement that it has the newer gospel?

In fact, as per the Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification of 1999, both Catholic and Lutherans agreed on a common position regarding justification.

Is that all the C(c)atholics? Because it ain't all the Lutherans. Not surprisingly it is the lib Lutherans.

Thanks for the affirmation of what appears to me to be relevant truth in such matters.

This was the Lutheran World Federation who did that — they say they comprise 66 million of the world’s 70 million Lutherans. As to which splinter groups this comprises and doesn’t comprise of, I don’t know.

“Thanks for the affirmation of what appears to me to be relevant truth in such matters.” So, as a pentecostal, what is your belief in predestination?

Whose conviction is that?

I’m speaking truth. If you think truth is foolish, I pity you.

Dear xone,

Concerning the joint declaration on justification, if I recall correctly (and as I get older, that seems to be less often than before, that I'm recalling correctly, LOL), when submitted to the Vatican, the declaration was “accepted” but with a fair number of reasonably important caveats to clarify where the declaration didn't quite jibe with actual Catholic teaching.

Again, I don’t see how purposeful, intense, but polite and reasonable conversation is “middle of the road.” I just don’t see it.

There are thousands of websites hosted by Roman Catholics for Roman Catholics where Roman Catholics are praying to Mary, often for forgiveness.

When I googled prayers to Mary for forgiveness, hundreds of sites popped up. Your own RC catechism says Mary redeems believers along with Christ.

Paganism.

Ironic that the non-all inclusive compendium of Scriptural writings, the bible, was edited and published by that same "RCC" you now trivialize and insult

The Bible is a "non-all inclusive compendium?"

What Christian believes things like that?

"As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." -- Galatians 1:9

Here's an excellent understanding that corrects the RCC pov...

THE BIBLE: ITS HISTORY, INFALLABILITY AND AUTHORITY

I'm including Alamo-Girl in this ping because this link concludes with a quote from Van Til that reminds me of observations she has made...

The noted theologian Cornelius Van Til captures the attitude that all Christians should possess concerning the Bible in his book "Why I Believe in God" which is written as a letter to an atheist:

"So I readily grant that there are some 'difficulties' with respect to belief in God and His revelation in nature and Scripture that I cannot solve. In fact there is mystery in every relationship with respect to every fact that one faces, for the reason that all facts have their final explanation in God Whose thoughts are higher than my thoughts, and Whose ways are higher than my ways."

"Paganism."

Nope, just an artifact of your insufferable ignorance. The Catechism of the Church (963) acknowledges and honors Mary as being truly the Mother of God and of the redeemer. It does not claim that she is either a redeemer of co-redeemer.

If you want to reiterate the beliefs of the Catholic Church intellectual honesty would dictate that you actually check with the Catholic Church, not mine Google sites looking for collaborative or out of context quotes.
