Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

The best solution is to become a Pentecostal!

To prevent fossilisation, right? Point taken.

Don't Pentecostals have a daily necessity of commitment, hence meaning more prayerfulness in life and more generosity to fellow man and good deeds since Pentecostals do believe that salvation can be lost - not every time we sin, however as you believe that we are saved by faith in the blood of Jesus, nothing else. But if we renounce our faith, we will lose our salvation, as per the Pentecostals, correct?

Unrepented sin will eventually undermine faith, leading to a loss of salvation, correct?

So, Pentecostals do believe that one is saved by faith, but can loose their salvation if it is not kept by works, right? Since you do not believe in Predestination.

"Yes, and afterward we praise God, not each other."

How is that different than asking the saints to pray on our behalf and then praising God later?

Totally agree. Why WOULD someone appeal to another human for intercession when the one to be granting the request is fully available to that someone in the first place? I also always thought the idea of praying to Mary because she was the mother of Jesus, was kinda like cheating or getting “cuts” in line. ;o)

“How is that different than asking the saints to pray on our behalf and then praising God later?”

It isn’t. The comment was made in response to a reply that afterward, the poster thanked Mary and praised her intervention...or something like that. It is getting late, and I’d have to go back to read the post to get the exact words.

My point was that I found it disconcerting to praise Mary for answered prayer. Praising God with Mary would be OK, IMHO, since the whole communion of the saints thing doesn’t bother this Protestant any.

you are good. OK, let's look it up now.

On the Outlawing of Bokonon
So I said good-bye to government,
And I gave my reason:
That a really good religion
Is a form of treason

More:

San Lorenzan National Anthem (1922, Bokonon)
Oh, ours is a land
Where the living is grand,
And the men are as fearless as sharks;
The women are pure,
And we always are sure
That our children will all toe their marks.
San, San Lo-ren-zo!
What a rich, lucky island are we!
Our enemies quail,
For they know they will fail
Against people so reverent and free.

Deathless.

The fact remains that your question was wrong -- Annalex said "a Catholic is instructed to examine his conscience before presenting himself for Holy communion", to which you said "Interesting. So here the Roman Catholic is to trust his conscience, but the Protestant who believes in Jesus Christ is not to trust in or rely on his conscience. " ---> apples and oranges:

Annalex says about examining your concience prior to Holy communion and you ask a question about some trusting their conscience to follow the teachings of Machen like the OPC does and to make Machen some kind of demi-god if not God.
Why DO Machenites in the OPC believe that Baptists are wrong? And they also disagree with Branch Davidians on beliefs and Luherans and Arminians on episcopality or theology.

Finally, why does the OPC believe in Theonomy, that only the OPC should be allowed as state religion and others should receive capital punishment?

And you use WIKIPEDIA to argue OPC doctrines?

Oh, the curtain example is not my own, once you read some of the Church Fathers, they do ponder on the meaning of that incident.

lol. Show me where I spoke about creating graven images without including praying to those graven images

Post # 921 "Nowhere in Scripture does God command anyone to construct a statue or graven image and kneel to that image in prayer." --> nothing about praying TO the image

Instead it seems that the OPC considers the Jews to be idolators because God commanded them to create the serpent in the desert and to look on it and be cured?

Some time later, I read one of the Lutheran sects started accepting GAY PASTORS!!!

GAY PASTORS!!!! THAT’S AN ABOMINATION!!!! I think there are what, 4 or 5 different sects of Lutheran, but it puts a black eye on all of them. That’s probably not fair, but sometimes I do that

I agree that that is an abomination, but I do think you are being unfair to many conservative, Christian Lutherans -- there are a few I know on FR that belong to the LCMS and they reject all these innovations of the ELCA. If you wish, I can direct you to them -- they are good, Christian people.

Since you aim to find your own way, may I suggest that you also read the Early Church Fathers? Like +Ignatius of Antioch, +Irenaeus of Lyons, +Clement of Alexandria, +John Chrysostom. Since Christianity is a community of believers, learning together with believers past and present can help us in our growth.

Anybody performing outside of faith through Him, is acting in sin

Like Gandhi? or Muhammed Yunus of Bangladesh?

We're not pretty, we're not especially good. We're kind of overweight and sentimental. We're earthen, in spades. Satan sees it and trembles.

Ah, yes, he does doesn't he. However, the world hates the church (lower case "c") because it IS all true believers in Christ. Satan couldn't care less what labels we give ourselves.

Hope you feel better soon. I will pray for you even if you don't ask me to! :o)

St Augustine,
He’s got to be a saint.
So if I get to be one also
Don’t you faint.

Sometimes a hair's breadth is important, as in this case.

MD is correct -- when I read up on the early definitions of the Trinity I got incredibly confused between hypostaesis and hypo.. -- it's incredibly complex and yet is not complete enough to describe the complexity that is God. That's because He is so completely out of our sense of dimension, that we can't comprehend him -- it's like a Virus trying to comprehend a human body, but we'd have lesser chance!

Must be the psychological effect of the box covers that make the product taste/work better. LOL!

Deviating from this thread a bit -- that IS true -- studies have shown that we are highly influenced by packaging

Pesach of 2012 is 3 1/2 years or 42 months into this sabbatical cycle.

But before that is 2010. Are you ready for war in G-d's Land this year ?

Interesting -- please could you explain more? So, there will be war breaking out in Israel this year? And that would lead to 2012 and the end of days?

Side note: the best potatoes are used for the premium wavy or ripple brands. When they are between crops and use old potatoes, they concentrate on barbeque and other heavy flavours to cover up the deteriorating product. Good for covering up spots and discolouration as well.

The things one learns on FR! Amazing! And, thank you!
