CANTON, N.C. (October 13, 2009)—The Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C. will celebrate Halloween by burning Bibles that aren’t the King James Version, as well as music and books and anything else Pastor Marc Grizzard says is a satanic influence.
Among the authors whose books Grizzard plans to burn are well known ministers Rick Warren and Billy Graham because he says they have occasionally used Bibles other than the King James Version, which is the sole biblical source he considers infallible.
According to the church’s Web site, members will also burn “Satan's music such as country, rap, rock, pop, heavy metal, western, soft and easy, southern gospel, contemporary Christian, jazz, soul (and) oldies.
“We will also be burning Satan's popular books written by heretics like Billy Graham, Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll, John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Mark Driskol, Franklin Graham, Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, Paula White, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joyce Myers, Brian McLaren, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa, The Pope, Rob Bell, Erwin McManus, Donald Miller, Shane Claiborne, Brennan Manning (and) William Young.
During the book burning, according to the Web site, barbecued chicken fried chicken and “all the sides” will be served.
Well, maybe she can give us tips on the grilled chicken.
I saw an interesting book once, a history of the world from a linguistic point of view. The Germanic languages, the author said, were never really able to spread in the way the Latin-based languages did and mostly withered when confronted with them. English was able to survive by grafting Norman French into itself.
In case you missed this.
My bad you are correct. but the KJV is Elizabethan
What are the major arguments used to support KJV only?
1. All the other versions are perversions, i.e., no other translation should be used for personal study or in worship.
2. Offering variant readings of the underlying Greek text undermines the authority of the written word of God.
3. The Septuagint is a false translation that isn't even close to the Hebrew text of the KJV OT.
Any many others.
I was in your crowd once ... but I read something that totally changed my view about the KJV. It wasn't a book by some author, it wasn't a Sunday school class or a Chick pamphlet, it was something right under my nose.
What was that document? It was the Preface to the 1611 version. What is the Preface? The Preface to the 1611 version is a short (relatively) section before the text of the Bible where the KJV translators discussed their translation approach and philosophy. One day I took the time to read the Preface and was astounded how much information is in there.
But what I noticed most of all was that the translators addressed each of these three issues (and more) in the Preface. And their discussion made anything that Dr. Ruckmann said on the topic irrelevant.
If you have any doubts I encourage the more adventurous out there to do the following:
1. Go find a few of the KJV only sites and make a list of their grievances with other versions.
2. If your 1611 version does not have a Preface then consult Dr google, you will find it.
3. Take the time (it will be painful in the old English but you can do it) to read it, maybe multiple times.
You will find that many of the topics KJV only bases their position on are covered (and demolished) in the Preface ...
Why do I post this: because as one other fella posted in so many words:
It is important to read the Bible ... and if you are having trouble grasping a passage, a multiplicity of translations will aid in sorting out the meaning. You can't do that if KJV is the only translation you use. The KJV is a very good literal translation and I have no problem with people that insist on the KJV only in a church worship service. I would rather have everyone following along in the KJV than half the people flipping through other translations wondering why the passage the pastor is preaching on doesn't say the same thing in their version.
Or, the satanically inspired “How Much Is That Doggy in the Window?”
AAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
This is what happens when you get rid of the Pope: some illiterate sets himself up as “pope” and proceeds to rule “infallibly” using only the “plain sense of the Scriptures, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit”.
The whole idea that “I don’t need no furriner pope tuh tell me whut thuh Bible sez” is just the modern version of the spirit of rebellion that led to the Fall of Man.
The truth, of course, is that every Christian needs someone to tell him or her what the Bible says. That’s why Jesus established a Church, and established Peter as the earthly head of that church. Without Peter and his successors to define what Christianity is, it’s anything goes.
Meet Dr. Peter S. Ruckman.
this ‘ll get them pews filled on Sunday!

Pope Benedict is alive and well. :)
I agree completely, but there ARE negative stereotypes and this guy fits them all.
LOL
I hate to break it to these lads but their copies of the KJV are themselves corrupt. They don’t have all the books that were in the KJV in 1611 and there have also been many revisions since 1611 to the KJV.
I’d love to take a copy of the original in there and watch their heads spin.
This is wrong on so many levels that I don’t know where to start. It’s more than ignorance. This Baptist minister is either totally ignorant concerning bible translations or he is mentally ill. I suspect both. I remember a Baptist preacher telling me not to waste my time going to seminary. Only people without the Holy Spirit have to go to the seminary. I can’t begin to name the number of ministers that I have met that have turned ignorance into a virtue.
I sure hope he burns some OCP stuff.

Unless one has the original God inspired original manuscripts, everything else including the KJV is a product of man who is imperfect. How can imperfect men perfectly translate Greek and Aramaic languages to English and have it be a perfect representation of the original? As you know, current day Bibles are translated from 2 different sources, both of which do not agree in some places.
Even though the KJV was never "revised", many human errors and other changes in translation of various words and typos were "corrected". Here is a rather lengthy article that discusses changes made in the various editions:

The Catholic Church is not very impressed with the KJV (or any other Protestant Bible):
http://www.catholicapologetics.net/0002kjv.htm#The%20Errors%20and%20oddities%20found%20in%20the%20King%20James%20Bible:
My minister uses the KJV in church, so I bring a KJV study Bible to church. Otherwise, I use the NKJV and the ESV (English Standard Version). But like I said in my original post, it is more important to read and study any of the older reliable Bible versions (and the ESV), and not worry and fret about "the perfect translation". Because none of them are perfect.

Thanks for the post.
Riddle me this: Why is the Catholic mass in Latin?
It usually isn't, in the U.S., anyway.
Is it their way of "telling you what the Bible says"?
It's the job of the Church to tell us what Christ is teaching through the Scriptures. Since the Catholic Church created the Bible (aka the Canon of Scripture) by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, only the Catholic Church can infallibly teach what it means.
Do you speak Latin?
Abes etiam a consilio insultandi mihi nisi latine loqui scias. In English: No. I can read it, though. There's this thing called "high school", see...
Or is just another way to keep the "lay people" ignorant and thus dependent on them?
It is impossible for a practicing Catholic to be ignorant of Scripture, since it's preached to us from the pulpit in great quantities -- an Old Testament portion, a Psalm, a reading from the Epistles, and a generous portion of the Gospel, plus most of our prayers and music -- at each and every daily and Sunday mass.
And we lay people are supposed to be dependent on the clergy. That's why they are called "pastors" (Latin for "shepherds".) We are sheep, and they are here to feed us and lead us to the sheepfold (John 21:15-18). The Kingdom of God is not composed of self-made, two-fisted he-men, but of people who are like little children. Is that a problem for you? Then take it up with Jesus, not me, because He said it (Matt 18:3) .
An attempt to preserve some remnant of the power that was stripped from them by Martin Luther's reformation, Gutenberg's printing press, and the translation of the Bible into English?
Hmmm. Let's compare and contrast. The Catholic Church is still around, bigger than ever. On the other hand, the Lutherans and Episcopalians (the original "protestants") are going extinct, the Calvinists and Wesleyans are not far behind, and the Evangelicals are doing what the synagogues did in the 1950s -- suburbanizing, and slowly turning into purpose-driven social clubs and self-improvement centers in the process. That's what happens when your doctrine is made by individuals teaching by their own authority instead of clinging to the Rock ( = Peter ) left to us by our Lord.
But I'm not here to win an argument with you. I have told you the Truth; it's up to you to believe it or go your own way. Write if you have more questions!
