The ritual, called perpetual adoration, is, at one level, strikingly simple: around-the-clock, people take turns sitting in a chapel in the presence of a consecrated wafer. But at another level, the ritual reflects an embrace of the teaching of Catholicism that many find hardest to understand: the belief that, during Mass, bread and wine are literally transformed into the body and blood of Jesus.
Cardinal Sean P. OMalley will preside at a Mass to celebrate the relaunch of perpetual adoration at the shrine.

Why don't these journalists educate themselves before they write such a article??
Ritual? This one really isn’t. Unusual? Oh, jeez.
The Adoration goes on in my Church here in Texas every week, and has do so for many years.
OK - could you tell me, as a non-Catholic teaching in a Catholic school, what is wrong with the term ‘wafer’ in this case. I hear it quite regularly, along with ‘host’ and if there is a faux pas to be avoided I’d like to know.
To me, wafer could be any kind of cracker.
This is a consecrated host made of unleavened bread. Two main differences.

A consecrated host is no longer bread, at least to the Catholic/Orthodox. The term wafer, as in communion wafer, is not inherently disrespectful. However, after consecration, the term host is more appropriate. Host is derived from the Latin: hostia, which means sacrifice.
Our parish has had perpetual Eucharistic Adoration for some time now.
Our current pastor reinstated it when he arrived here in 1991.
