I can’t see from the original article where DNA was used at all, I think they came to this conclusion by plugging his name into existing family trees as so many folks do.
Many don’t know they can summit a sample of their DNA and at least 4 generation and from that can tell the various religions around the world your ancester migrated.
It takes more time but it can also help one fine out who their parents were if they were an orphan and had not clue where to start.
And this is relevant how?
Looking at collateral lines, I'm more than willing to reject the "Conrad" hypothesis and stick with the "Condorman" hypothesis.
That way he gets to claim "Bucky" Phillips as a cousin, and "Bucky" is just interesting as all get out!

DNA can be collected from something as small as a few strands of hair or a cheek swab. I’m not sure if it can be collected from a fecal sample, but I do remember reading a Cold War account of how some CIA agents staked out a men’s room in a hotel where Nikita Khrushchev was meeting, collected the sample and sent it to the lab which was able to analyze it enough to determine that Khrushchev’s health was deteriorating and what, exactly, was wrong with him. Within weeks, he was out of power.

The trick is to have both John Adams and William Henry Harrison as ancestors ~ like virtually all American Presidents (except a handful of early ones, but they were fairly close cousins).
You know what a hopeless task is? It's trying to figure out who's gotta' die first so you can get Harrison's spot in the Society of Cincinatus.
