DNA can be collected from something as small as a few strands of hair or a cheek swab. I’m not sure if it can be collected from a fecal sample, but I do remember reading a Cold War account of how some CIA agents staked out a men’s room in a hotel where Nikita Khrushchev was meeting, collected the sample and sent it to the lab which was able to analyze it enough to determine that Khrushchev’s health was deteriorating and what, exactly, was wrong with him. Within weeks, he was out of power.
