God Exists, and He's Mormon
The American Spectator ^ | 3/16/2009 | Jeremy Lott

Posted on 03/16/2009 6:19:18 AM PDT by Alex Murphy

"God exists, and he's American" is the judgment of Dr. Milton Glass, fictional nuclear physicist from the acclaimed Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons comic Watchmen, when he learns that Jon Osterman, has come back from the dead. Osterman disputes Glass's judgment, but the new deity's protest rings as hollow as his promise of fealty to his first girlfriend.

In the story, Osterman dies in a freak lab accident that is the stuff of countless superhero origin stories. It utterly obliterates his body but leaves his mind intact and powerful. Osterman then re-creates himself from scratch. He is not just reborn but transfigured and renamed, as the world's oddest crime fighter: Dr. Manhattan. By the end of the tale, Manhattan even talks of Osterman as a different person.

Obviously, Dr. Manhattan looks different. He has the skin of a Smurf, the body of a Greek god. He crackles with energy and can manipulate other matter with the same ease that he reconstructed himself. Less obviously: His changed perceptions bracket him off from the rest of mankind. He can see things at the molecular level but is puzzled by basic human emotions and conventions. His women complain that they can't connect with him and he often walks around in his rebirthday suit. He perceives time differently as well -- the future and the past run together.

Dr. Manhattan is clearly a sort of god. After the mystery at the heart of Watchmen is resolved, he professes a newfound fondness for human life and muses, "perhaps I'll create some" -- elsewhere in the universe. But what sort of a god is he?

Enter: irony. One group that is not likely to come out in great numbers to see the new film Watchmen is members in good standing of the

Baptism is a means of grace (a concept the LDS don’t understand).

Yes, exactly.

I saw several queries on 2 threads yesterday asking if baptism was a "requirement" -- as if the emphasis in baptism is on what a person is doing in that water. A person becoming baptized is a receiver.

"Checklist religion" has trouble fathoming a faith focused on reception.

It wants to scurry everywhere to complete its "to do" list to try to change God's mind about who they are.

The "book of moron" does not translate to "free exchange of ideas" it translates to hateful, juvenile and stupid insult and makes every FReeper on the board look like an idiot. Why don't you people get a life?

Please proceed with your 8647 paragraphs of carefully selected & edited multi-colored scripture to put me in my place. That will certainly prove your point. Tell us who you THINK I am judging from your archives. Please enlighten us, CC, to the loving nature of Jesus.

Well, I testify that Jesus' blood was powerful enough not only to atone for Adam's sin, but mine. I have his rich blood streak running over every part of my sinful body, my sinful mind, my sinful soul, my sinful spirit. I am drenched in His blood; saturated in it; bathed in it. It cleanses me entirely of all past sins, my present sins, and every sin I'll commit (or action I'll fail to responsibly commit) because I entrust that His blood is sufficient for me.
His blood,
His mercy,
His grace
...makes me "worthy"--tho the fact that He went to the cross for me shows my ultimate value.

Like any heir, I'm an heir by His death and His gift to me...NOT an heir based upon...
...my works,
...my obedience,
...my self-promotional worthiness,
...my commandment-keeping,
...my bishop-graded temple recommend,
...my Word-of-wisdom keeping,
...my exaltation checklist,
...who I marry,
...if I marry,
...and all the other plural "My-s" I can ever list--as if my life was to center on...
...me
...or as if all my good works were primarily or unconsciously done to boomerang back on my bootstraps to kick me into divinity...
...rather than simply to love the One I serve.

Now THERE is a testimony!

Thanks to this forum you have the right to vomit hate at Mormons 24/7 along with your little group of spiteful self righteous mangy hens who have little else to do in their lives, evidently, except eat brownies in front of the computer and gang up on people. It’s pathetic and juvenile.

My response showed you that believers are not only to encourage and strengthen, but to warn and to rebuke.

++++++++++

Do you believe that posters should be responsible for their posts and that the information in the posts should be accurate?

I often wonder if it it is irony that begets hypocrisy or vice versa...

Photobucket

For those who become distressed with the "spirit in this forum", there is no requirement for anyone to read this thread...there are plenty of closed LDS threads whereupon the mormon propaganda is posted and there is no debate allowed.

Those with "thin skin" may be more comfortable visiting there.

Ah but she’s worried about how this makes freepers LOOK.

It seems to be all about appearances for some posters.

In my opinion, posters who limit their postings to include nothing but carping, caviling, accusing, complaining and ignoring forum rules about "making it personal" do not have a leg to stand on in criticizing the contibution to the discussions by other FReepers.

How about “The Mormon Doctrine of Deity,” by B.H. Roberts...

So, Resty, in your cut & paste spamming [who's TomH & Jeremy????] you included this book above...

So, you recommend B.H. Roberts to the world? You recommend a polygamist who took a third wife around 1894 -- directly disobeying your "prophet's" manifesto to supposedly end polygamy?

And if the LDS have had such a long track record of being such marvelous citizens, why did LDS voters in 1898 vote a civilly disobedient, prophet-disobedient Democrat like Roberts into Congress, anyway?

Well, I can tell you a fact, Resty. American citizens didn't recommend B.H. Roberts to the world. They actually told Roberts, upon election, to back home to Utah. In 1898, riled-up Republicans and others delivered a 28-roll, 7-million signature banners to Congress to influence them to not seat Roberts. Congress sent Roberts packing.

But I guess since you're an advocate for Roberts' books, I guess this tells us a lot about you...

I see, this looks like you are defending those who do not like to be put on the spot about the accuracy of the information they use.
There are enough differences in the Churches that ya’ll do not need to use made up stuff to prove the differences.
