I stand corrected. It appears that research grants for individuals doing research and Pell grants and student loans to students constitute accepting federal money. Applying that same logic, I guess my local grocery store is on the federal dole because it accepts federal money via food stamp payments by customers.

If you read the article at the link, it verified that BYU is covered by the federal rules regarding educational institutions that take federal money, which was the topic of the conversation.

Use whatever logic you please.

They also do have some rules under the Department of Ed (yuck) that would be attached to their accreditation.

Yeah, kinda like hats and peepstones make for heavenly revealed scripture....and ...ROTFL...the logic that an "ignore" button is needed when NOT clicking on a thread works every bit as well...

No, tuition is not a tithe, but some tithing dollars are used to supplement the University, to keep tuition low, compared with other private Universities.

LDS and non-LDS have to abide by the same standards of conduct. Non-LDS students of course do not tithe.

If he were to pursue any legal action, he would have to show he did not violate university conduct policy, which would be a very hard thing for him to do.

The university is very aggressive about its independence from federal entanglement. It costs a lot of subsidize the student’s education because it won’t accept federal funds which help other universities keep the prices low. Yet the university cost to students is very reasonable and its degrees are respected worldwide.

you have to live according to the honor code while you are a student there and complete the required courses. He failed to fulfill both of the requirements

Both? Could you expand on that in light of this:

"Hardy was excommunicated during the month between completing his courses and graduation ceremonies."

I read the article. Your assertion is incorrect. Students obtaining loans or Pell grants receive the federal money who, in turn, give it to BYU for tuition. Researchers receive grant money which they utilize to pay for the facilities where they perform research projects.

The point is BYU doesn't directly receive money from the federal government just as a grocery store doesn't directly receive money from the federal government when it accepts food stamps from a customer.

There two general requirements to graduation from BYU.

1) Pass the requisite classes. This was allegedly done.

2) Comply with the honor code. This obligation begins when you sign the honor code and extends until your time at BYU is complete. Until you graduate, you are a BYU student and are required to live according to the honor code. If you do not you can be thrown out of the university. In this case, he allegedly did not comply with the honor code for the full duration of his time as a student. Because he did not comply with the honor code, the university had the right to throw him out of the university. It is neat that he completed his courses, but he hadn’t graduated and so he was still a student.

I am so glad you clarified that distinction some times these things if not understood become fodder or buzz words.
