The West's unity didn't last long. After the battle, the Spaniards sought to expand into North Africa, while the Venetians wanted to attempt to retake Cyprus. In the end, neither objective was accomplished, and the Venetians negotiated a peace treaty with the Sublime Porte in 1573 in which they gave up their claim to Cyprus.
Had the Holy League successfully retaken Cyprus, there would likely be no Turkish community on the island today--and no ongoing conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
