“Okay....here’s some simple quotes from one of the founders of mormonism, the much honored B.Young.
Are these bashing? “
When taken out of context and used in a way to create a false impression, yes, same as Micheal Moore does with his movies. Take a biased selection of items, present them framed in a false way, and lead people to jump to conclusions that are not true.
The reply to your query is a most cogent example of why some are becoming disgusted with the many mormonism apologists spinning so actively at FR. Reminds me of the spin Obama tried to put on the comments of Jeremiah Wright ... context smontext, the comments are sickening regardless of the context.

That’s why I stay out of the religion forums. It’s a public forum, and people are going to use lots of false logic and flat-out tricks to win their arguments. Others will argue forcefully, accurately, and with respect and civility — but you have to wade through the first for the second.
I don’t think your approach to the “problem” is a good one. Your intent will not be acheived, and you are likely to sour people who up until now have been willing to defend your religion against extraneous attacks in non-religious forums.

17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the otherThis is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! 18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)and which I should join. 19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof. 20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, Never mind, all is wellI am well enough off. I then said to my mother, I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true. |
How were any of those quotes taken out of context? They plainly stated the beliefs of the Mormon leaders at the time they spoke. Where is there one “lifting out of context” statement and what is the context that it is lifted out of....show surrounding and supportive passages, by all means.
BTW: I do not bash Mormons, but why should a Mormon promote their religion as the cause of their being “nice people”, when any Athiest can be a “nice people”, on purpose?
I mean, Mormons seem to be taking special delight to claim that they are “the people’, and that they are “the people” because they are “Mormons”.
RC and Protestants and other branches of Christianity do not make those claims here, like Mormons do, from my observations.
No, B. Young was VERY clear, on what he said, and how he MEANT it.
Frankly the TRUTH about J . Smith and B. Young....is like the elephant in every mormon's living room. Sadly IMO you've too much time, love, and money invested into your religion to see the TRUTH.
I pray you see it before you pass from this earth....
