If longevity of a doctrine or tradition - and the credentials of its mortal founders - were the measure, Judaism would have Catholicism beat by a long shot.

INDEED!
THANKS YET AGAIN for the unadulterated Gospel TRUTH of JESUS THE CHRIST.
Amidst my busy-ness at the college this afternoon, I was reading another thread and came across a phrase that God used to drop a profound truth into my mind, heart and spirit at a deeper broader level than I'd ever thought fo it or felt it before. If I can find it again and reply, I'll share it on that thread and ping you to it, Angel-Gal. It kind of stunned me in its simplicity and Biblical authenticity of the 'scarlet thread' Genesis to Revelation.
LUB,
All that matters is that you believe God, love Him, trust Him.Yes. We should believe Him when He says, in John 14:16, that the Holy Spirit will abide with us forever and will, as He says in John 16:13, guide us to the complete truth. If we believe Him when He says He will be with us till the end of time in Matthew 28:20, and if we trust Him when He says Hell will not prevail against His church in Matthew 16:18, then how can we not believe that there must be a consistent belief and practice that has been preserved by Christ and His Holy Spirit from Pentecost right up to the present time? If we don't believe that then we don't believe Jesus keeps His promises. And if we don't believe in Jesus ...

If longevity of a doctrine or tradition - and the credentials of its mortal founders - were the measure, Judaism would have Catholicism beat by a long shot. That is true. And if Christ hadn't come and brought about the fulfillment of Judaism in a Universal Church then the best we could do would be to be a Jew and pray for the coming of the promised Messiah.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace. Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. - Romans 8:9

Wow. And here I thought #10 was good enough. :O)
I am intrigued by the Papal Syllabus of Errors (1864) mentioned here. As noted it was issued by Pope Pius IX but it was filled with theological errors. This coming from the Chair of Peter. Tsk. Tsk.
Indeed Harley.
It will curl your hair!
Most people that leave the Catholic do so after years of not attending Mass and most had no idea what Catholicism was all about.
Most protestants that convert to the Catholic Church only do so when they come to the realization that the Catholic Church is the one truth Christian faith and they are longing for the truth.
They are only accepted into the Catholic Church after many months of studying the faith and only after their spiritual advisor knows they are truly ready for their new faith.

But unfortunately the RCIA program is pretty pathetic in most places. I had a friend who was taking RCIA classes (here in NY) and it wound up being a therapeutic session because this one lady comandeered the whole class. My friend did become Catholic (down in Texas) from growing up Christian Science.
Wow.....in the words of Amos Bronson Alcott, To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant.
