Imitation of Jesus Christ - God's Grace Is Not Given to the Earthly Minded  God's Grace Is Not Given to the Earthly Minded

THE VOICE OF CHRIST
MY CHILD, my grace is precious. It does not allow itself to be mixed with external things or with earthly consolations. Cast away all obstacles to grace, therefore, if you wish to receive its infusion.
Seek to retire within yourself. Love to dwell alone with yourself. Seek no man's conversation, but rather pour forth devout prayer to God that you may keep your mind contrite and your heart pure.
Consider the whole world as nothing. Prefer attendance upon God to all outward occupation, for you cannot attend upon Me and at the same time take delight in external things. You must remove yourself from acquaintances and from dear friends, and keep your mind free of all temporal consolation. Thus the blessed Apostle St. Peter begs the faithful of Jesus Christ to keep themselves as strangers and pilgrims in the world. [Peter 2:11]
What great confidence at the hour of death shall be his who is not attached to this world by any affection. But the sickly soul does not know what it is to have a heart thus separated from all things, nor does the natural man know the liberty of the spiritual man. Yet, if he truly wishes to be spiritual, he must renounce both strangers and friends, and must beware of no one more than himself.
If you completely conquer yourself, you will more easily subdue all other things. The perfect victory is to triumph over self. For he who holds himself in such subjection that sensuality obeys reason and reason obeys Me in all matters, is truly his own conqueror and master of the world.
Now, if you wish to climb to this high position you must begin like a man, and lay the ax to the root, in order to tear out and destroy any hidden unruly love of self or of earthly goods. From this vice of too much self-love comes almost every other vice that must be uprooted. And when this evil is vanquished, and brought under control, great peace and quiet will follow at once.
But because few labor to die entirely to self, or tend completely away from self, therefore they remain entangled in self, and cannot be lifted in spirit above themselves. But he who desires to walk freely with Me must mortify all his low and inordinate affections, and must not cling with selfish love or desire to any creature.

Imitation of Christ Devotional Ping!

Please notify me via FReepmail if you would like to be added to or taken off the Imitation of Christ Devotional Ping List.

Also, many Protestants have asked me to put them on this ping list. I have gladly done so, and will add your name if you FReepmail me. I reassure you that you will not get all the Catholic pings.

The Religion Moderator gave me permission to copy the rules from the Chambers' thread (with a few alterations) which I think are applicable. Thank you to the RM!

Come to these threads as you are; leave with what you have discovered.

Absolutely no flaming! These daily threads are intended to be devotional in nature. If a particular day's offering says nothing to you, please just go on and wait for the next day. Consider these threads a DMZ of sorts, a place where a perpetual truce is in effect and a place where all other arguments and disagreements from other times and places are left behind.

I can attest from personal experience (Salvation's)  that reading from Imitation of Christ daily will almost certainly change - not one's faith - but one's perspective of his/her own faith, and open up new vistas in your spiritual life. If - when - this happens to a reader of these threads, and they choose to share what has happened within them - we are treading on hallowed ground. Be respectful.

THE IMITATION OF CHRIST

BY

THOMAS KEMPIS

A very powerful spiritual guidance for the soul who seeks to imitate Jesus Christ.

Learn from me, because I am meek and humble of heart. Mat. 11:29

This is the most difficult spiritual task yet, in my opinion.

I am copying and sending them to my only son who is in prison.

Since I feel his utter desolation at being away from his family and read his utter Faith in Christ that he will make it through and that this horror has happened for God's own reason ... I can't believe he is the same materially successful and family oriented man he has so quickly put his trust in Christ (and St. Michael -- don't ask how this is so important, but it is).

I am using all of those which are not so strong and will save this one for me and not send it to him, quite yet anyway.

Thanks, Salvation and prayers for all of my family please on many fronts.

My Mom, now deceased, always had the Imitation of Christ at hand and now I know why ... through your offerings.

Christ has you by your hand, I am positive.

Prayers for your son. It is wonderful that you are standing by him in this way.

Yes, many of these are quite difficult for ALL to absorb. Even I looked at this title and wondered to myself.

Those who have put their faith in Christ in prison sometimes have a difficult time making the transition into the “normal world” as Christians; the habits of prison don’t translate well into the workaday world and they have not developed Christian habits and disciplines that apply to the workaday world. It will be a new thing for him when he is released. Some of the best advice I was ever given was to start my day with the Bible, before the family is awake. My prayers are with him.

Don't worry about my son's "new-found" Christianity -- he has always been a practicing Catholic, always been a reader and "practitioner" of the Bible and his Faith.
However, with his incarceration, his time is very empty and he has turned to his Faith and deeper Biblical study to carry him through.

Yes, the prisoners that I know have the opportunity to spend a lot of time with the Bible. The time for study and prayer is one of the few things that the prisoners have that I would like for myself. “The Imitation of Christ” seems good for those circumstances. God bless and Merry Christmas.
