Actually, Mormons place the highest authoritative regard upon whatever their "prophet" last said.

Most of the "weird" Mormon doctrine doesn't come from the BoM - it comes from Journal of Discourses.

They have little regard for what either the BoM or the Bible says if it disagrees with what their "prophet" says at a later date.

God only knows where, for NONE of it is found in ANY of their SACRED books!!!

Actually it’s the other way around. The scriptures are canonized. Leaders adding doctrine to the accepted canon is not common.
