And then they can go back to praying the Rosary DURING mass, and it will cut down on their time commitment. NOW I see what the Papa’s hidden agenda was!
Well, that was one of the genuine abuses (people praying the Rosary and all their private devotions during the Mass) that the liturgical reform was supposed to get rid of. However, the reform that had actually started decades before VatII was well underway and was actually eliminating this and other practices, including hideous, sappy hymns. By the time I was a teenager, it was mostly little old ladies (often foreign born - I lived in NYC) who were the culprits, and I think the feeling was that the best thing to do with them would be - uh, to wait them out.
But then the NO came along and destroyed the long-prepared reform that was actually finally in the implementation phase.
