'The Nativity Story' Movie Problematic for Catholics, "Unsuitable" for Young Children
By John-Henry Westen
NEW YORK, December 4, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A review of New Line Cinema's The Nativity story by Fr. Angelo Mary Geiger of the Franciscans of the Immaculate in the United States, points out that the film, which opened December 1, misinterprets scripture from a Catholic perspective.
While Fr. Geiger admits that he found the film is "in general, to be a pious and reverential presentation of the Christmas mystery." He adds however, that "not only does the movie get the Virgin Birth wrong, it thoroughly Protestantizes its portrayal of Our Lady."
In Isaiah 7:14 the Bible predicts the coming of the Messiah saying: "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel." Fr. Geiger, in an video blog post, explains that the Catholic Church has taught for over 2000 years that the referenced Scripture showed that Mary would not only conceive the child miraculously, but would give birth to the child miraculously - keeping her physical virginity intact during the birth.
The film, he suggests, in portraying a natural, painful birth of Christ, thus denies the truth of the virginal and miraculous birth of Christ, which, he notes, the Fathers of the Church compared to light passing through glass without breaking it. Fr. Geiger quoted the fourth century St. Augustine on the matter saying. "That same power which brought the body of the young man through closed doors, brought the body of the infant forth from the inviolate womb of the mother."
Fr. Geiger contrasts The Nativity Story with The Passion of the Christ, noting that with the latter, Catholics and Protestants could agree to support it. He suggests, however, that the latter is "a virtual coup against Catholic Mariology".
The characterization of Mary further debases her as Fr. Geiger relates in his review. "Mary in The Nativity lacks depth and stature, and becomes the subject of a treatment on teenage psychology."
Beyond the non-miraculous birth, the biggest let-down for Catholics comes from Director Catherine Hardwicke's own words. Hardwicke explains her rationale in an interview: "We wanted her [Mary] to feel accessible to a young teenager, so she wouldn't seem so far away from their life that it had no meaning for them. I wanted them to see Mary as a girl, as a teenager at first, not perfectly pious from the very first moment. So you see Mary going through stuff with her parents where they say, 'You're going to marry this guy, and these are the rules you have to follow.' Her father is telling her that she's not to have sex with Joseph for a year-and Joseph is standing right there."
Comments Fr. Geiger, "it is rather disconcerting to see Our Blessed Mother portrayed with 'attitude;' asserting herself in a rather anachronistic rebellion against an arranged marriage, choosing her words carefully with her parents, and posing meaningful silences toward those who do not understand her."
Fr. Geiger adds that the film also contains "an overly graphic scene of St. Elizabeth giving birth," which is "just not suitable, in my opinion, for young children to view."
Despite its flaws Fr. Geiger, after viewing the film, also has some good things to say about it. "Today, one must commend any sincere attempt to put Christ back into Christmas, and this film is certainly one of them," he says. "The Nativity Story in no way compares to the masterpiece which is The Passion of the Christ, but it is at least sincere, untainted by cynicism, and a worthy effort by Hollywood to end the prejudice against Christianity in the public square."
And, in addition to a good portrait of St. Joseph, the film offers "at least one cinematic and spiritual triumph" in portraying the Visitation of Mary to St. Elizabeth. "Although the Magnificat is relegated to a kind of epilogue at the movie's end, the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth is otherwise faithful to the scriptures and quite poignant. In a separate scene, the two women experience the concurrent movement of their children in utero and share deeply in each other's joy. I can't think of another piece of celluloid that illustrates the dignity of the unborn child better than this."

It is certainly by far the safest route.
Thx for your abiding and persistent Holy Spirit Wisdom and demonstration of such fruits, by His Grace, of course.
Our views of physical reality cannot reconcile, because neither of us are wrong it is a matter of worldviews. We are different observers.
By all appearances, we are stuck on the Aristotle v Plato paradigm. In the Aristotle paradigm, mathematical structures forms universals geometries do not exist, they are language terms only. The mathematician invents the geometry. In the Plato paradigm they do exist, geometry exists and the mathematician comes along and discovers it.
A mathematical structure is an abstract, immutable entity existing outside of space and time. If history were a movie, the structure would correspond not to a single frame of it but to the entire videotape. Consider, for example, a world made up of pointlike particles moving around in three-dimensional space. In four-dimensional spacetime the bird perspective these particle trajectories resemble a tangle of spaghetti. If the frog sees a particle moving with constant velocity, the bird sees a straight strand of uncooked spaghetti. If the frog sees a pair of orbiting particles, the bird sees two spaghetti strands intertwined like a double helix. To the frog, the world is described by Newtons laws of motion and gravitation. To the bird, it is described by the geometry of the pasta a mathematical structure. The frog itself is merely a thick bundle of pasta, whose highly complex intertwining corresponds to a cluster of particles that store and process information. Our universe is far more complicated than this example, and scientists do not yet know to what, if any, mathematical structure it corresponds.
Despite that, it is quite refreshing for me to be corresponding with you on matters of reconciling spiritual and physical realities from Genesis to Revelation. Differences are to be expected there too because we are different observers delving into an area where, at least in my case, the Spirit does not lead me strongly for or against some interpretations. For me, it is a license to muse. LOLOL!
My musings on Genesis (and Revelation) is that there is more real than metaphor being revealed to us though I hasten to add that I do have a leaning in the Spirit that Genesis 1 and 2 are not speaking merely of the creation of the physical realm but the spiritual as well and more specifically that the Garden of Eden (aka paradise) exists in the spiritual realm. Also, that Adam and Eve are real beings, made for eternity but banished to mortality, the physical realm.
The days for instance are also real to me, but not from our space/time coordinates. God is the author of Genesis 1 and observer of His own Creation and when we consider inflationary theory and relativity, 6 equivalent days at the inception space/time coordinates is equal to approximately 15 billion years from our present space/time coordinates. Age of the Universe
At the same time, I am not offended at all by your interpretation of Genesis or Revelation for that matter. These are musings on both of our parts, and, in the end (as you say) well know. But for now we see through a glass, darkly.
But I am tickled pink that you are interested in reconciling the spiritual and physical realms! (I just wish you were a mathematical Platonist LOLOL!)
lol. Of course Wmfights knows the verse. He's posted it a half-dozen times.
Assurance and the caution to work out our salvation in fear and trembling are not contradictory, but complimentary.
Article 7 For, in the first place, God preserves in those saints when they fall his imperishable seed from which they have been born again, lest it perish or be dislodged. Secondly, by his Word and Spirit he certainly and effectively renews them to repentance so that they have a heartfelt and godly sorrow for the sins they have committed; seek and obtain, through faith and with a contrite heart, forgiveness in the blood of the Mediator; experience again the grace of a reconciled God; through faith adore his mercies; and from then on more eagerly work out their own salvation with fear and trembling. Article 8 So it is not by their own merits or strength but by God's undeserved mercy that they neither forfeit faith and grace totally nor remain in their downfalls to the end and are lost. With respect to themselves this not only easily could happen, but also undoubtedly would happen; but with respect to God it cannot possibly happen, since his plan cannot be changed, his promise cannot fail, the calling according to his purpose cannot be revoked, the merit of Christ as well as his interceding and preserving cannot be nullified, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit can neither be invalidated nor wiped out. Article 9 Concerning this preservation of those chosen to salvation and concerning the perseverance of true believers in faith, believers themselves can and do become assured in accordance with the measure of their faith, by which they firmly believe that they are and always will remain true and living members of the church, and that they have the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Article 10 Accordingly, this assurance does not derive from some private revelation beyond or outside the Word, but from faith in the promises of God which he has very plentifully revealed in his Word for our comfort, from the testimony of the Holy Spirit testifying with our spirit that we are God's children and heirs (Rom. 8:16-17), and finally from a serious and holy pursuit of a clear conscience and of good works. And if God's chosen ones in this world did not have this well-founded comfort that the victory will be theirs and this reliable guarantee of eternal glory, they would be of all people most miserable. Article 11 Meanwhile, Scripture testifies that believers have to contend in this life with various doubts of the flesh and that under severe temptation they do not always experience this full assurance of faith and certainty of perseverance. But God, the Father of all comfort, does not let them be tempted beyond what they can bear, but with the temptation he also provides a way out (1 Cor. 10:13), and by the Holy Spirit revives in them the assurance of their perseverance. Article 12 This assurance of perseverance, however, so far from making true believers proud and carnally self-assured, is rather the true root of humility, of childlike respect, of genuine godliness, of endurance in every conflict, of fervent prayers, of steadfastness in crossbearing and in confessing the truth, and of well-founded joy in God. Reflecting on this benefit provides an incentive to a serious and continual practice of thanksgiving and good works, as is evident from the testimonies of Scripture and the examples of the saints...CANONS OF DORT

I see you doing it(preaching) making a "Z" while snapping you're fingers, with one hand on a hip.. after each paragraph.. That WAS GOOD...
Go Girl.... Amen
Not true. A Reformed Protestant is incomparable to "any Protestant". Our views are relatively distinct and definable. You have been shown confessions to which we adhere, along with the works of Calvin, Luther, and a number of authors of like minds. You have seen with your own eyes the consistency with which we post.
Churches which are explicitly Reformed have the power to "excommunicate" members who openly proclaim non-Reformed views.
One can be a Southern Baptist and believe in free will, just as one can be a Southern Baptist and be Reformed, and deny the free will. So, when one says "I am a Southern Baptist" there is a entire spectrum of possible beliefs he or she may hold that may or may not correspond to other members of his or her congregation.
Your first sentence is correct. Your second is completely false. You selected one difference among members of the SBC. It just so happens it is the largest difference of view, IMO. After that, you will be hard pressed to find significant differences in any way approaching the importance of the first. All SBCs are pledged to the Baptist Faith and Message, a confession that is compatible with, although a wishy-washy version of, many of the Reformed confessions. There is no "wide spectrum", as you say, on other fundamental issues. Your characterization is just not correct.
But as an Orthodox or Catholic believer, I don't have that luxury to cherry-pick what i want to believe and what i don't want to, and still call myself Orthodox or Catholic. I can't profess filioque and say that I am Orthodox. I can't profess Protestant redemption theology and remain Orthodox.
That isn't true either. :) Every time I say you guys are all programmed to follow like robots, you all come out to say how free you are to believe in whatever you want on issues that haven't been ruled upon yet by the Magisterium/Consensus Patrum. But now, when you need to show unity, then you don't have the luxury to cherry-pick. How convenient! :) It doesn't wash. The truth is that we both have some leeway to hold our own views within our respective faiths, and also that either of us could be kicked out of our churches if we pushed a certain type of view too far.
Since Protestants are under no obligation to follow any particular rule, but their own interpretation of the Bible, and their own conceptualization of the faith based on personal preferences, intellect, culture, etc., my statement that it is a man-made, tailor-made to one's individual taste and preference religion is not an "unfortunate lack of understanding of the Reformed Faith," FK, is it?
Since the premise is completely false, of course it is most certainly an "unfortunate lack of understanding of the Reformed Faith". But I've learned to live with it. :) You still appear to believe that any Christian who is not Orthodox or Catholic belongs in the same group. I continue to prove that it is not so, but yet to no avail. Oh well.
I do not think there is any such thing as the Protestant "religion". Christianity is about a relationship with Christ, period. That relationship can and does happen among members of many different faiths which call themselves Christian.
LOL! I can't help it, my techer was Jewish.
Is there a Biblical principle that says that one believer's prayers are greater than another's because of status or position? Since Mary is being venerated for what she did, this seems to be another works-based principle.
When I see the words "Holy Mary, save me!", the last thing in the world I think of is a prayer request. And please believe me, this has nothing to do with my bias against Apostolic views. I simply look at the words and I see a request of someone who could directly make it happen. There are plenty of other words that would make me think it was a request for intercessory prayer, but none of them are used. Can you understand why I am having a problem seeing it the way you do from a logical standpoint?
Also keep in mind that we do ask the saints for things other than prayer. We also ask for guidance. And, of course, we thank them and honor them for their witness.
Thank you for saying so. Other than this has been advertised to me, and what you are saying fits much more in line with the evidence I have seen.
None of that takes away from Christ. We discussed it before: when I spend time with my children and my parents in law, it take nothing from my love for my wife; rather, it is another expression of my love for her. Likewise with Christ: it is because I love Him, I feel compelled to put myself in the company of His saints and His mother.
I do believe it takes away from Christ. When you spend time with your children and in-laws it certainly takes away time with your wife. But since you do not worship her in a religious sense, this is not necessarily a bad thing. However, you are asking God to share your time with Him the same way you would ask your wife to share your time with the in-laws. I really don't think these are comparable. One passage that comes to mind is:
Luke 10:41-42 ; 41 "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
When I think of one minute spent in prayer to Mary or any Saint, I think of Martha.
So, in God's 'tool shop' He drew up a list of those He will make for heaven and those He will make for Hell? Lovely. Yet the Bible says that Hell was only for the devil and his angels (cf Mat. 25:41)
Anyway, what you are saying is that God saved the 'elect' before He even created them? Were they in any danger? I mean, to be saved means that you have to be in need of saving, FK. You'd have to be on the road to perdition before you were on the road to perdition if you know what I mean.
What were the elect saved from before they were in need of saving? How can you 'save' someone who is not even alive yet?
Why not just cut through the chase and call it the way it is in the Reformed theology: God decided to create manking destined to hell, but decided to 'save' some.
If this is Reformed theology, it has no biblical basis; God did not create man destined to hell in need of saving.
At any time during the life of an elect, God will grace that person with saving grace. The result of that grace will always be true faith, 100% of the time
Oy, vay! Not even the Apostles who walked with our Lord had true faith 100% of the time.
[Double] Predestination and bondage of the will...but other member in your church don't have to share that, and still be whatever your church calls itself, right?
Churches which are explicitly Reformed have the power to "excommunicate" members who openly proclaim non-Reformed views
You still appear to believe that any Christian who is not Orthodox or Catholic belongs in the same group
I don't believe it, I know it. Because none of those groups is in either particualar Apostolic Church. That much is clear and couldn't be more clear. It's not a presumption; it's a fact: they are all outside the Church. Correct. That's why we have so many Protestant denominations. So, which one is the 'true' one? My homeowners' association has the 'power' to force members to pick only certain kind of a fence...
After that, you will be hard pressed to find significant differences in any way approaching the importance of the first
Protestant congregations consist of like-minded people, like political parties. They tolerate some degree of deviation from the 'official truth,' but the limits are set. Those who disagree go to a different assembly or start one of their own, just like a political party.
Every time I say you guys are all programmed to follow like robots, you all come out to say how free you are to believe in whatever you want on issues that haven't been ruled upon yet by the Magisterium/Consensus Patrum
No, FK, the reformed believe they are 'programmed' by God. We believe in free will. We are not programmed, we choose to put our trust in God's Church because God gave us the opportunity to do so and we accept it.
Naturally, since different people are at a different levels of spiritual maturity, they will have different views and conceptualizations; being human they will have some doubts even if they are already spiritually mature, and especially then, not so much as far as their faith is concerned, but doubt in themselves of being worthy of God's blessings.
This is precisely why no one must presume to be individually 'right' or demand others to follow his or her conclusions, but those of the 2,000-year old faith given to the Church beginning with the Apostles.
We are always keenly aware that we believe and worship in an imperfect manner, and that arrogating [self-]righteousness is the last thing on our free-to-do agenda. Our only reminder is to, after all has been said and done, to doubt onself first and the Church never.
Protestants on the other hand assume the right to interpet the Scripture no matter what level of spiritual growth they happen to be. It is, as you say, a 'relationship with Christ' that makes up Protestant religion. It's a personal religion based on one's own interpretation of some version of the Bible.
You have seen with your own eyes the consistency with which we post.
I have seen a dozen or so like-minded people of Reformed persuasion who pat each other on their backs. I have seen Lutherans and Anglicans whose posts resembled none of the Reformed-minded members' of this forum. I have seen Armenians who claim to be every way 'Reformed,' with whom the 'orthodox' Reformed violently disagree.
In case you forgot, there are some 30 thousand different Protestant denominations who share nothing in common but the basic elements: One God (all), Holy Bible (some), Holy Trinity (some), dual nature of Christ (some), Creed (some). And even in those areas where they do agree, they differ.
Christianity is about a relationship with Christ, period
Herein lies the rub, FK. By that simplistic definition, based on personal understandings and preferences, as one sees fit, anyone who calls on the name of Jesus is a Christian! The Mormons, the Trinity-denying Protestants, the Gnostics, the Arians, the Nestorians, and the list goes on.
Christ left His Church to the Apostles and the Apostles to their successors in an unbroken lineage and in faith once delievered and unchanged (some are closer, very close, i.e. High Anglicans and many Lutherans; others couldn't be farther, but all are outside the Church, by their own choice).
I don't believe it, I know it. Because none of those groups is in either particular Apostolic Church. That much is clear and couldn't be more clear. It's not a presumption; it's a fact: they are all outside the Church
This should be attached to the last paragraph. I have no clue how it got pasted where it is. Sorry.
Because the Church fathers told us. ;O)
Cute. And the Apostles quote overwhelmingly from Septuagint (LXX) which the Protestants reject. And the Church Fathers used deuterocanonical books, which the Protestants also reject. The Protestants seem to recognize only that which they want tom hear, and read their own canon.
BTW-This is an excellent example where "all" does not always mean "all". Obvious Paul is generalizing when he say all Cretians are "liars" as he salutes the Cretian bishops in Titus 3:15. Clearly he does not believe the Cretian bishop to be a liar.
" Because the Church fathers told us. ;O)"
LOL!!!! More stuff you learned from Orthodoxy! Maybe you should change your screen name to "Lascaris"! :)
" Tts 1:12 One of themselves, [even] a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians [are] alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies."
There are Greeks who say that to this day, from up north! 'Course, they're not really Greeks. They're Bulgarians! :)
The real beauty of this is that you and spunkets can reason together in good faith, and since both of you are "searchers," can "compare notes" in good grace.
May God ever bless you both!

The word is nigh thee, [even] in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; | Deuteronomy 30:12-14 It is not in heaven above, as if there were one saying, Who shall go up for us into heaven, and shall take it for us, and we will hear and do it? Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith God the King of Israel, and the God of hosts that delivered him; I am the first, and I am hereafter: beside me there is no God. |
Isaiah 41:4 Who hath wrought and done [it], calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I [am] he. Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I [am] the first, and I [am] the last; and beside me [there is] no God. |
Revelation 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. | Jeremiah 17:10 I the Lord try the hearts, and prove the reins, to give to every one according to his ways, and according to the fruits of his devices. | Jeremiah 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, [I] try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, [and] according to the fruit of his doings. |
Revelation 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. | Psalms 2:9 Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces as a potter's vessel. | Psalms 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. |
Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; | Isaiah 22:22-24 And I will give him the glory of David; and he shall rule, and there shall be none to speak against him: and I will give him the key of the house of David upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and there shall be none to shut; and he shall shut, and there shall be none to open. | Isaiah 22:22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. |
Revelation 7:16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. | Isaiah 49:10 They shall not hunger, neither shall they thirst; neither shall the heat nor the sun smite them; but he that has mercy on them shall comfort them, and by fountains of waters shall he lead them. | Isaiah 49:10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. |
Revelation 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [is] the light thereof. | Isaiah 60:20,21 For the sun shall no more set, nor shall the moon be eclipsed; for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be completed. Thy people also shall be all righteous; they shall inherit the land for ever, preserving that which they have planted, even the works of their hands, for glory. | Isaiah 60:20,21 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Thy people also [shall be] all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified. |
If I am already justified, then it really doesn't matter what I think right now about the whole thing, now, does it? Thus, if I had your point of view, sanctification serves no purpose, since I will instantly be beamed into heaven, no matter what I subsequently do. What exactly is the purpose of sanctification in your theology? There is NO PARTIAL or BARELY being saved in "faith alone" theology. Christ covers ALL with His righteousness (according to you). Thus, sanctification on earth doesn't matter... As long as I ONCE believed.
I don't know what book you've been reading, but it isn't the Christian Bible if you believe that our subsequent actions do not count towards salvation. I could quote from almost EVERY NT book something that contradicts that idea.
The rest, I won't bother addressing - the first paragraph was enough for me.

I could scarcely disagree more (with the possible exception of the "whatever" where, of course, I agree wholeheartedly).
From my POV: Ordination and confirmation are acts of the Holy Spirit. So, from my POV to say that someone has been confirmed or ordained is to say that the Holy Spirit has done a work in that someone. For someone to say, "Listen to me because the Holy Spirit has done a work in me," strikes me as Biblical and not very different from saying, "Judge my life and see if I show the fruits of the Spirit," - with respect to taking attention away from God and directing it to the individual.
However, neither is sufficient to justify drawing an audience. There are diversities of gifts, and displaying the fruits of the Spirit does not demonstrate that one has the vocation or gifts of a theologian or teacher.
This is formal disagreement; that is, it seemed you were making a statement you considered self-evident, and I wanted to note that it was not evident to this particular self.
