"Some rocks exposed to the sun for a very long time turn dark." Exactly which rocks would they be? Most rock does exactly the opposite. As the surface of a rock is exposed to oxygen and freeze-thaw cycles, it begins to crumble at a microscopic level, which causes it to appear to 'bleach.'
