This is all about the bishops. They are princes in their dioceses. A good bishop will have good priests and support good priests. A bad bishop will do the opposite--and there's little the laity can do to stop him, aside from withholding funds (send your money to EWTN, the FSSP, etc. instead) and/or switching over to the local Maronite/Byzantine rite eparchy as some FReepers have done (but be aware that you can only change rites once!)
That said, I wish the Vatican would move faster to exonerate these faithful priests who are under fire by bishops who, in many cases, can only be described as agents of satan. The good news is, if they suffer faithfully, their reward in Heaven will be great.

I've heard that, but recognize that most refugees from the western church don't ever formally make the switch. And there's really no reason to do so if their eastern home is viewed as temporary.
The eastern Catholic churches are in communion, so you can take Eucharist and participate in most of the mysteries (sacraments) regardless of the church that you "officially" belong to. The only times I think it might get dicey for a western Catholic is if they're looking to have a child Baptised/Chrismated or looking to get married.
