I don't think we have to be kind to bugs, although I think we have to be kind to higher minded creatures, even the ones we eat. That after all was the beginning of kosher killing in the old days. Kindness is a chief trait that Abraham possessed, and when Jesus said "Blessed are the merciful", he was referencing kindness.

Killing animals for food is also a sign of our corruption. God gave man plants as "meat." It is only after the Fall that we begin to eat animals, and animals each other.
And yes, "Blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy" sasy our Lord Jesus Christ.
