Excuse Me While I Rant...
Stand Firm [LA] ^ | 7/01/2005 | Jackie Bruchi

An article in the Opinion Journal from the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page discusses the fury of the religious left over the "hijacking" of Christianity by the religious right.

They're the furious faithful--the growing number of religious liberals incensed by the political influence of Christian conservatives. Last week another organization joined their ranks with promises to "reclaim Christianity" and challenge the association of vital religion with conservative politics.

At the risk of appearing unfeeling - EXCUSE ME!!! Hijacking Christianity?
This statement is a lot like blaming the divorce on your spouse for their uncompromising position on extramarital activity.

What the religious left - or the Progressives as they now wish to be called - refuse to admit is that the "religious right" hasn't moved an inch - not to the right or to the left. We are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. We can be found in luxurious offices and humble dwellings. We aren't hard to find. We are standing right where we were when the Progressives left the building. We stand right where Christians have stood for thousands of years. We are standing on the Authority of Scripture and praying for the strength to remain standing while never losing sight of the fact that our hope can only be found clinging to the Cross of Christ.

We are finally awakening to the fact that our society is in moral decline because our churches have forgotten their mission - to be the light of Christ and carry His Gospel to the ends of the earth. The new Progressives are angry that those of us who still believe in the Authority of Scripture are no longer willing to remain silent as our Lord and Savior is turned into a "What's Happening Now Jesus." We are sorely tried by the unceasing chants of the Progressives that it is "unloving" to believe what Scripture teaches. We can no longer sit idly by as our church "leaders" talk of the Spirit doing a "new thing" without using Scripture as a guide to test that Spirit.

Reclaim Christianity? We would love to welcome you back to the fold. We are the same miserable sinners seeking the forgiveness of our Saviour you used to know when we both read from the same Gospel.

And if rejoining us is not on your agenda, could you at least recognize the hypocrisy of denying us the right to stand on our beliefs?

"our society is in moral decline because our churches have forgotten their mission"

That's not the only reason, but it's a strong one:

The leftist Rats have it wrong.

The Right did not hijack Christianity, they merely moved in to the spaces left when the Democrats abandoned their souls.

Great article! Thanks for posting.

These two sentences are key:

1) We are finally awakening to the fact that our society is in moral decline because our churches have forgotten their mission - to be the light of Christ and carry His Gospel to the ends of the earth.

2) The new Progressives are angry that those of us who still believe in the Authority of Scripture are no longer willing to remain silent as our Lord and Savior is turned into a "What's Happening Now Jesus."

The leftists have gotten used to having their way. They are furious that we have finally discovered our backbones enough to stand up and say "enough!"
