It was the damn civil engineers that lead to the downfall of the roman empire with all the lead pipes for the water.

Actually, I've heard that the water Rome used was so high in minerals that it coated the pipes within a few weeks and there wasn't much lead in the water. They did get lead poisoning from another source however. The cheap wine most Romans drank was very acidic and was "mellowed" by letting it sit in leaden pitchers which would impart a sweeter taste. The acidic wine would disolve a bit of the lead and become less sour. It also became a cumulative poison.
