On a Mission from God [ECUSA Bishop Spong]

Just when you think it’s safe to take out the garbage, John Shelby Spong rises from the dead and writes more rubbish. This time he has decided to attack one of the great Christian gentlemen of the 20th century, John Stott. Actually, Spong’s article was written four years ago, but I have only now discovered it (biretta tip to Josh). But whether written yesterday or four years ago, this piece is a piece of garbage. Spong is one of the true embarrassments of the Episcopal Church, not simply because he is a bishop of the Church who spouts nonsense and heresy, not simply because he has little understanding of the views that he so vehemently attacks, not simply because his philosophy and pseudo-scholarship are fifty years out of date, but especially, most especially, because he really believes that he is intelligent, thoughtful, innovative, progressive, and enlightened. John Shelby Spong is absolutely clueless what an intellectual lightweight he truly is.

Like the Blues Brothers, Spong is on a mission from God. We can only speculate when and where the divine voice spoke to our ignorant, deluded, apostate brother.

“Jack.”

“Yes, Lord.”

“I have chosen you to be my prophet of enlightenment to the world.”

“Oh Lord, thank you, thank you, thank you. I knew I was special. I knew I was smarter than everyone else. I knew I had a great work to accomplish. But now I truly do know it. What exactly do you want me to do?”

“I want you to attack, firebomb, and eradicate every fundamentalist.”

All fundamentalists?”

“No, just the Christian ones. They are my greatest enemy. They are the ones ultimately responsible for bringing hatred, violence, and injustice into the world. They are the ones responsible for the oppression of women, homosexuals, and chihuahuas. They are the ones responsible for creating orthodoxy. I hate them, Jack.”

“I hate them, too, Lord.”

“And remember, Jack. You are smarter than all of them.”

“Yes, Lord, I know.”

“One other thing, Jack.”

“Yes?”

“I really don’t exist. I’m really just you.”

“Yes, Lord. I knew that already.”

Traditional Anglican ping, continued in memory of its founder Arlin Adams.

FReepmail me if you want on or off this list.
This is a moderately high-volume ping list (typically 3-7 pings/day).

Bishop Spong is on a mission from "his" god. I very much doubt it is the same as our God.

I had to laugh out loud at this one. It's absolutely true.

Spong isn't on a mission from God, he's on a mission from fraud.

Good one! It's really hard to pray for those who choose to be deluded and guided by other spirits, isn't it? It's hard for me anyway.

I believe that this is provided for in the 1979 BCP. We often use Form III of the Prayers of the People, one part of which goes like this (I added V: and R:);

V: We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;

R: That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

Sounds pretty appropriate to me.

You could pray for someone like Spong, but I think his beliefs are self-inflicted.

He is a bold blasphemer with no wish for repentence.
