Vatican, Mar. 24 (CWNews.com) - At his weekly public audience on March 24, Pope John Paul II (bio - news) recalled that 20 years ago, he consecrated "all of humanity" to the Virgin Mary, thus fulfilling "our Lady's plea at Fatima."
The Holy Father began his remarks by reminding his audience that Thursday, March 25, is the feast of the Annunciation, "which allows us to contemplate the Incarnation of the Eternal Word, made man in Mary's womb." He added that Mary's "fiat" echoes the obedience of Jesus to the divine plan, "to which we must add our 'Yes.'"
The Pope said that at three different times during his pontificate, he has made consecrations to the Virgin Mary. On December 8, 1978-- just weeks after his election-- he consecrated the Church and the world to the Immaculate Conception. In June 1979 he renewed that consecration during a visit to the shrine of the Black Madonna in Poland. Then on March 25, 1984, he made the consecration which, he said, fulfilled the terms of the Virgin's plea at Fatima.
The Pope said:
Twenty years have gone by since that day when, in spiritual union with all the bishops of the world, I entrusted all of mankind to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in response to Our Lady's plea in Fatima.
Today's world remains too full of "hatred, violence, terrorism, and war," the Pope said. He asked for prayer for all the innocent people who suffer from violence as "so much blood continued to be shed." He appealed to the Virgin Mary's aid to help turn men's hearts and minds, to end the violence.
Although his voice was halting, the Pope read the entirety of his remarks, in Italian. When he had finished his formal delivery, he offered greetings to the 14,000 people assembled in St. Peter's Square for the audience, speaking to them in French, English, German, Spanish, and Polish. He remained in the Square for nearly an hour, giving his blessing to young couples and to the sick, and posing for pictures with pilgrim groups.

From a Greek Hymn to Isis:
"My Lady, I shall not stop hymning your Mighty Power,
Immortal Saviour, goddess of the many names, almighty Isis,
...
All who are held in the destiny of Death, all in bondage,
all who are racked with pain which will not let them sleep,
...
all these find salvation if they pray for Your present help.
Hear my prayers, You whose Name has Mighty Power,
be propitious to me and free me from all affliction."
Isis speaking to Apuleius, from The Golden Ass, Chapter 47:
"Behold I am come to take pity of thy fortune and tribulation, behold I am present to favour and aid thee, leave off thy weeping and lamentation, put away thy sorrow, for behold the healthfull day which is ordained by my providence, therefore be ready to attend to my commandment."
And finally, this most famous of Isis' sayings:
Come to me all you who are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.
(Written over the entrance to her temple at Dendera, where I have seen it myself).

Just to point out that your reference is to a Rastafarian site. Well, you and I might think that more reliable than a Roman Catholic one, but I suspect we are in a small minority.
However, the issue is not whether Mary and Isis are equivalent, but rather just who is really manifesting herself in these supposed "Marian" visitations.

Maybe John Locke can point us to a reference.
Plutarch, De iside et osiride. (Best translation is by Robert Graves)
Vera Vanderlip The Four Greek Hymns of Isidorus and the Cult of Isis (Listed by Amazon as out of print)
Malcolm Drew Donalson: The Cult of Isis in the Roman Empire
My previous post quoted from the first two books. The Vanderlip is a secondary source, but contains the primary sources complete.
To: John Locke
Thanks.

OUCH!!
Sorry, sorry, in my previous post I accidentally deleted a chunk of text, and conflated two references.
Please amend thus:
Plutarch, De iside et osiride (Best translation by J G Griffiths)
Apuleius, The Golden Ass (Best translation by Robert Graves)

"Does anybody really believe that story with the phenomenon in the sky and little kids that saw the Blessed Mother?"
What about the 70,000 other people, including many skeptics, who saw the Miracle of the Sun?

I am afraid that I am going to respond publicly to anyone who persists in scandalizing others to seduce them for the schism and that I am not going to be kind. Charity (caritas) is love. It is not love to tell those in error what they want to hear. If and when the schismatics lay off the pope, they might be entitled to better treatment. I am already treating them more kindly than they treat JP II who is Christ's Vicar on Earth. When they return to the Church, IF they return to the Church, we should rejoice in the return of the prodigals and not until.
Meanwhile, I am not going to put up silently with the constantly malignant attacks on JP II. Neither should any Catholic. Praying for a return to the Faith by schismatics is always in order. Comforting them in their rebellion and defiance of papal authority and persistent scandalizing is not.

This is not an opportunity for Protestants to attempt to hijack a Caholic thread to instruct Catholics as to what Protestants imagine Catholics ought to believe. I don't tell you how to practice your faith. I don't need to be told how to practice mine.
I don't doubt that you are trying to share with Catholics what is most precious to you: your non-Catholic faith. Our common beliefs are far more numerous than our differences but, unless you convert to the Church of our ancestors (the RCC), our differences are still going to be our differences.
May God bless you and yours.

Ummmm, Sydney was probably being just a tad sarcastic. I would suspect he believes in the Miracle of the Sun as do I.

I don't see several Popes. Do you? Are you suggesting that there were no scandals pre vatican II? Are you suggesting that what Martin Luther did was right and that actually from that moment he (and presumably the Lutherans) became the one true Church?
Wake Up!! Christ warns us of people who will try to lead us astray. He tells us to be like little children (not glory in our own intellect) and that the gates of Hell will not prevail against My Church. Look at the Pope's credentials. do you know of anyone with better credentials to claim to be the Pope? If not, are you suggesting that the gates of Hell have prevailed against the Church? (and therefore Jesus was wrong?)

Sorry for coming so late to the table! I only have time right now to lend moral support to those who want the Pope to consecrate
Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Also, to say that I don't need Father Gruner or anyone else to "convince" me that Pope John Paul II said that as he was consecrating "the world" many were still many people "awaiting our consecration" (meaning Russia). I heard him say it myself as I watched TV that day! (Well, with the commentators translating his words into English.)
I note that they're celebrating anniversary of the "Fatima consecration" and not "the consecration of Russia."

I did quote from a Rastafarian site and it was quite good at the comparison of Isis and Mary. You're really pushing the analogy. I do find it amusing that you are quoting Amazon and calling it "Catholic".

You are entitled to your opinion but you don't have a right to cast dispersions on traditionalists when other religions are elevated to the same level of our Holy Faith by the Vatican - the ancient Faith is the only Faith - and all the ecumenical hooey is for the birds. Perhaps you should check which flock you are amongst.

One more tally into the dishonest field.
The MYSTICAL, HOLY ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, CHRIST'S KINGDOM on EARTH has TRUTH at its HEART, apparently LFODA, you do not.

I knew a Marian woman who absolutely adored Fatima. She was shocked that I'd never heard of it. I was shocked when I heard what it was.

***This is not an opportunity for Protestants to attempt to hijack a Caholic thread ****
I missed the notation is the header stating "Catholics Only". Since when is open discussion and give-and-take refered to as "hijacking".
***I don't tell you how to practice your faith. I don't need to be told how to practice mine.***
I am not telling you how to practice your faith. I am asking questions as to what the basis for some of these beliefs are and seeking to obey the scriptrue which says, Test all things and hold fast to what is good."
"An unexamined life is not worth living."
To: PetroniusMaximus
You may see yourself as "asking questions" merely. I see you as butting in to arguments that are not yours to involve yourself in. You are free to post on FR and I am free to criticize the motives of any protestant to butt into what are strictly Catholic affairs. I am not disrespecting you.
I reciprocate by refraining (except in response to attacks on the Roman Catholic Church and its leadership and doctrines) from sticking my Catholic nose into protestant affairs. I, as a Catholic, have nothing to say about Jimmy Swaggert and James Bakker. They are the business of the Assemblies of God. Vickie Gene Robinson is the business of Anglicans or Episcopalians. The recent ecclesiastical Methodist trial of a lesbian minister is Methodist business. Etc.
As to the honorable pagan aphorism at the end of your post, I would remind you that Catholic examination takes in more than YOPIOS. We have a rich and nearly 2,000 year-old teaching magisterium (rejected by protestantism) and an understanding of the history of Christianity that proceeds from our founding by Jesus Christ Himself and continues through the many instances of individuals or sects peeling off in protest against the RCC. I do not question the sincerity or integrity of most "reformed" Christians. As a Catholic, I MUST question many of the judgments which underlie protestantism and its many branches.
