A polar bear chewed on the rudder of a U.S. submarine and then attacked it after the sub surfaced in the ice pack during maneuvers between the North Pole and Alaska this spring, the U.S. Navy reported last week.
The submarine "Connecticut," a new Seawolf-class sub, had partly surfaced with its sail and rudder sticking through the ice on April 27. An officer then looked around outside with the sub's periscope and noticed it was being stalked by a polar bear.
In a series of pictures captured on the periscope's camera, the bear apparently chewed on the rudder, then batted it around. The Navy says the damage was minor. ********** I have been in awe of the special type of people who choose to be part of THE SILENT SERVICE (These guys made a BIG SPLASH with they're Training Presentation) To all our Submariners I SALUTE YOU! Welcome to Camp RUN-A-MUK! Where the Plan Of the Day is: Mirth...Merriment...and FUN! Kick back! Relax! Tell a joke or two! Have a brew ! The BAR is OPEN! We've got Eye candy...Mind candy...and Chicken soup for the soul! And how could we forget click on the album & sing along! YELLOW SUBMARINE
1 ON THE CHARTS 1 on all the UK charts, with four weeks as the Record Retailer 1 (August 18-September 8 1966) and 13 weeks in the Top 50
RECORDED May 26 1966 in Studio 3 at Abbey Road, completed in Studio 2 on June 1; the master was Take 5.
RELEASED AS A SINGLE In the UK on August 5 1966 - Parlophone R5493
In the USA on August 8 1966 - Capitol 5715 PERFORMED LIVE Not performed in concert by The Beatles
and
'Yellow Submarine' was issued with 'Eleanor Rigby' as a double A-side single simultaneously with the album Revolver
'Yellow Submarine' was written especially for Ringo to sing - most Beatles albums included a song featuring Ringo on lead vocal
The song inspired the creation of the extremely successful Yellow Submarine movie, released in 1968 and reissued in upgraded form in 1999
I once expressed an interest in Submarine Service, but failed the first question: "I like to sleep with the windows open True___ False___ "
One of my "voices" is very fond of telling me that I'm about as useful as a screen on a submarine..... |

Good morning, Aeronaut and Otto, and thank you both for your dedication to the flyover of protection for our troops' Canteen, a place where we offer a "touch of home" for our troops, our veterans, their families, and our allies. Hope you have a wonderful weekend planned for you and Mrs Aeronaut and Luke and Otto.

You know, when I was a little kid, and I watched TV, my dad was totally into WWII movies and history. My dad used to bore me for hours on end with movies and documentaries on U-Boats, and other things. When I was a kid, I wanted to do anything but watch old movies about a war I enver knew.
When I got a little older, I rememeber while in school that I had to do a report on some aspect on the military. As if fate was screaming at me in the face, I ended up with submarines. I remember getting a C on that paper because once again, I wanted to do anything but anything related to submarines, or the military.
Now here I am, 26 years old, and a sonar technician on a submarine, and enriched in submarine history and tradition as one can get. And you know what the funny part is? I still would rather be doing anything than stuff related to submarines. Fresh air? Sunshine? TV? Reliable email? Who the hell needs that when you're surrounded by 8000 tons of high grade steel and spending time with 150 of your closest friends? What the hell was I thinking?
I was thinking, "$11,000? Hell sign me up!"
Kidding aside, I like my job. Don't neccesarily like who I work for half the time, but the job is rewarding. Now if I can just make second class. Perhaps then the re-enlistment option might sound a litle more viable.
People often ask me if I think the job is hard, or what is the hardest part of my job. You know what the hardest part of my job is? Staying the heck awake! Anyone ever wondered what sonar sounds like? You can find out for free. All you have to do is find someone who owns a C.B. radio, or if you own one, you're already ahead of the game.
Take the CB radio, and turn it on. Now make sure the squelch is turned down. You hear that static sound? Thats what the ocean sounds like 24 hours a day through a submarine sonar system. Add the occasional dolphin fart, or whale's mating, and there ya have it. Man I don't know about ya'll, but I never heard anything like that when I held a seashell up to my ear.
Heheh.
Everyone have a great weekend. I'll be leaving on deployment a week from today. If I don't happen to get on here before then, everyone take care and be well, and I will see you when I return.
God Bless the U.S.

Hi, Hostel! Thanks for the personal input, but I STILL admire you guys! Is it true that you have to be able to do ANY job on a sub?
Thank you for serving!

Dear Abby, I recently read your column advising grandparents on "tough love" for grandparents to give misbehaving grandchildren, whose own parents let them run wild. I have followed your advice, and enclose a picture demonstrating my technique when my grandson just won't behave while I'm babysitting for his parents. They have told me not to spank him, so I just take him for a ride, and he usually calms down afterward.
Sign me,
Tough Love Grandma
