Springsteen: 'Demand Accountability From Our Leaders'

Last night, Bruce Springsteen called for the President to be impeached. He was kidding, of course: the suggested impeachment would make a Clarence Clemons presidency possible.

But Springsteen wasn't entirely kidding.

At one point toward the end of his first show at Shea Stadium, right before playing "Born in the U.S.A.," he made a rare political statement.

Welcoming both Republicans and Democrats to his show, he told the audience to "demand accountability from our leaders," especially because our soldiers had been sent to fight a war.

It didn't take much to get the message. Springsteen also made an impassioned plea for the Coalition for the Homeless that seemed even more important, considering the recent upsurge in street beggars and sidewalk sleepers in Manhattan.

Rare? Every time I turn around, this liberal hound has been making little jabs at Republicans, starting back when he churlishly refused to let President Reagan use "Born in the USA" during his 1984 campaign.

I used to love Bruce, have seen him in concert several times. Now, I'm finished with him and his ilk. I will never spend money on these liberals again. They're the poison out to ruin this country!

This is not even the worst of what Springsteen did last night. According to accounts from fans on various websites, the show began with a recording of President Bush talking about Iraq's WMD. Then he opened with "Souls of the Departed," a seldom-played song from a 1992 album that portrays a veteran of the first Gulf War having problems after soming home. He also played "American Skin (41 Shots)" - the song he wrote in 2000 about the Amadou Diallo incident in New York City. And he really laid on the impeachment jokes. It was apparently a very political show, much more than any others this year.

I still love Bruce and his music, but this is getting kind of comical. The fans at Shea Stadium did not appreciate the politics. These are the last three shows of the tour, and the fans just want to hear him play his classic tunes and STFU. I have to say I agree.

After reviving his career by making a patriotic album, its nice to see him going back to his 'I hate America' stance. So typical. The worst thing is - my wife listens to his music.

I was at the show last night and your account is accurate. All around me people were yelling "Shut up and sing."

People started walking out during "American Skin" and the crowd was very annoyed. Van Zandt had to stand there and beg the crowd to cheer for an encore.

I think he was a little bit shocked by the reaction.

Why is Bruce making such an ass of himself and alienating such a large portion of his audience? I don't get it. It makes me sad to hear of people booing him. Everyone has been anticipating these last 3 shows and expecting him to pull out some real old chestnuts, not "American Skin," which everyone got sick of on the last tour after he crammed it down their throats. It's a good thing this tour is almost over, because if he kept this up for a few months his shows would look like the ending of "This is Spinal Tap."
