Schwarzenegger the ONLY candidate that didn't need a script
renew America ^ | 9-29-2003 | Mary Mostert

Posted on 09/30/2003 2:45:52 PM PDT by Hillary's Lovely Legs

I know sometimes I sound like a broken record, but did anyone besides me notice Thursday night how totally and completely wrong the dominant media has been about Arnold Schwarzenegger needing, in the words of the Los Angeles Times, “carefully scripted appearances he can control”?

It seemed like it was everyone else on the panel that was quoting script — their particular political script and the ONLY candidate who DIDN’T need a script was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Independent candidate Ariana Huffington related everything to bashing George Bush. Democrat Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante basically defended the California Democrat who created the California Crisis. Green Party candidate Peter Camejo spouted Green Party jargon on questions that actually didn’t fit the question which didn’t answer any citizen question. Republican Sen. Tom McClintock came across as a calm, knowledgeable, conservative who probably would do his best to save California with standard Republican approaches. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the only one able to think fast, concentrated on answering citizen questions by talking to and with the voting audience and who displayed clear thinking and a keen wit.

The very first question from a citizen was: “What should California's top priority be right now?” The first sentences of answers to the questions were as follows:

Who answered the citizen’s question? Schwarzeneggar.

The second citizen question was “How would you propose enhancing revenue and or what specific cuts would you make to spending in order to achieve a balanced budget?”

This time the first to respond was Senator McClintock:

This was followed by a round on California’s recently raised car tax, which ended in what the moderator viewed as a personal attack on Arnold Schwarzenegger by Arianna Huffington which went like this:

While Schwarzenegger never actually got to finish his allotted time without interruption, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind at the end of the debate who the leader was and who is undoubtedly going to get the bulk of the youth vote. Whether that will put him over the top with a Republican rival remains to be seen. If the Republicans want to have a Republican Governor, McClintock needs to bow out. If Schwarzenegger quits, a whole lot of Californians would stay home and start packing to leave the state.

Excessive motion being applied to your right wrist is not called a "workout".

Har. That's just as original as Arnold's soundbites. You're doing great!

Makes me wonder how many idol worshippers are lonely middle aged women.

Gosh, on top of hating Arnold's policies, you're jealous of him too!

Sincere question: What makes you think Schwarzenegger supporters are mostly women? Haven't you noticed all the men on these threads? I believe it's a question of pragmatism, not "idol worship", for most people of both genders.

He does have the advantage of being in a profession where you regularly memorize your lines. That said, I found he came off very comfortably in the debate.

I thought that the point of the article showed that the other candidates were less adroit in applying their scripted responses to the questions.

I see. Then why was it entitled "Schwarzenegger the ONLY candidate that didn't need a script"? If he's the best at applying his script, that presupposes a script, methinks.

So, when Arnold talks about the three-strikes law, Tom is ready to leap in with his "lemon law" jab. I got the sense he was going to use that line, whether or not it fit the topic.

I totally agree with you. I mentioned in my first post that I suspect that even some of the "jabs" and seemingly throwaway one-liners were probably prepared in advance. This goes for not only Arnold but everyone up there.

Arnold's comeback to Arianna's Boooooosh rants did seem to be spontaneous, because it is not likely he knew ahead of time that she would veer so far off topic.

I think that's a good point. Arianna really went way off the deep end in bringing Bush up into every issue appropriate or not, and Arnold called her on it.

The point I was trying to make is that all the candidates were scripted in one way or another; Arnold just happened to be the only one who used his script in a meaningful manner, on topic, and with greater effectiveness.

I basically agree with this. Too bad you didn't write the article :-) Best,

Those answers are so simple, why should they indicate they had the questions before hand?

Because they did have the questions beforehand.

**No, bless yours for not having debating skills. **

Why debate with one who insists on making ridiculous attacks? Pity sake. See ya, toots.

The mind-boggling surprise for the Democrats when they wake up after 10.7 will be that Arnold pulled in a large share of the nearly 10 million foreign born in the Caleefornia.

Immigrants like Arnold because he speaks his mind and speaks with an accent.

Let’s face the truth. If you were on the Millionaire show and the final question was one about the California budget and you had a phone-a-friend left, who would you want on the end of that phone, Tom or Arnold?

And he still synthesized them down to easily understood matters...gosh, he must be dumb. He's the best communicator in this recall and the one who can make the connection to the voters with the best impact.

Arnie's a pro who makes it look easy, but that takes discipline and smarts.
