Schwarzenegger the ONLY candidate that didn't need a script
renew America ^ | 9-29-2003 | Mary Mostert

Posted on 09/30/2003 2:45:52 PM PDT by Hillary's Lovely Legs

I know sometimes I sound like a broken record, but did anyone besides me notice Thursday night how totally and completely wrong the dominant media has been about Arnold Schwarzenegger needing, in the words of the Los Angeles Times, “carefully scripted appearances he can control”?

It seemed like it was everyone else on the panel that was quoting script — their particular political script and the ONLY candidate who DIDN’T need a script was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Independent candidate Ariana Huffington related everything to bashing George Bush. Democrat Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante basically defended the California Democrat who created the California Crisis. Green Party candidate Peter Camejo spouted Green Party jargon on questions that actually didn’t fit the question which didn’t answer any citizen question. Republican Sen. Tom McClintock came across as a calm, knowledgeable, conservative who probably would do his best to save California with standard Republican approaches. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the only one able to think fast, concentrated on answering citizen questions by talking to and with the voting audience and who displayed clear thinking and a keen wit.

The very first question from a citizen was: “What should California's top priority be right now?” The first sentences of answers to the questions were as follows:

Who answered the citizen’s question? Schwarzeneggar.

The second citizen question was “How would you propose enhancing revenue and or what specific cuts would you make to spending in order to achieve a balanced budget?”

This time the first to respond was Senator McClintock:

This was followed by a round on California’s recently raised car tax, which ended in what the moderator viewed as a personal attack on Arnold Schwarzenegger by Arianna Huffington which went like this:

While Schwarzenegger never actually got to finish his allotted time without interruption, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind at the end of the debate who the leader was and who is undoubtedly going to get the bulk of the youth vote. Whether that will put him over the top with a Republican rival remains to be seen. If the Republicans want to have a Republican Governor, McClintock needs to bow out. If Schwarzenegger quits, a whole lot of Californians would stay home and start packing to leave the state.

**Bash McClintock, bash McClintock supporters, and bash me** Will you say the same about those who are bashing the Schwarzenegger supporters?

When I see a thread in which someone posts a nonsensical article that praises McClintock, then proceeds to ignore the article's faulty logic and criticisms of the article and instead starts bashing Schwarzenegger supporters, and people who criticize the article (without addressing those criticisms), then sure.

Let me know if that happens. Best,

Arnold has been a Republican since he got here in the USA. He understands capitalism better than a lot of Americans. He's going to be a good governor.

I thought that the point of the article showed that the other candidates were less adroit in applying their scripted responses to the questions. They ALL had the questions in advance, the opportunity to prepare a debate "script" (which is my opinion is essential for TV) and according to Arianna, some of the proposed lines were even in the NYT earlier in the day. So, when Arnold talks about the three-strikes law, Tom is ready to leap in with his "lemon law" jab. I got the sense he was going to use that line, whether or not it fit the topic. The same is true with Arianna's constant scripted harping about off-topic issues (eg. going off on education when the car tax was under discussion and Booooosh and NRon everywhere else), and Cruz' scripted patronizing to Arnold and Arianna, sniffing repeatedly "I'm sure that you wouldn't know this" (the "you ignorant dorks" was merely implied). Arnold's comeback to Arianna's Boooooosh rants did seem to be spontaneous, because it is not likely he knew ahead of time that she would veer so far off topic.

The point I was trying to make is that all the candidates were scripted in one way or another; Arnold just happened to be the only one who used his script in a meaningful manner, on topic, and with greater effectiveness. The rest simply could not switch gears in the debate format as easily as he did.

There are most likely hundreds of threads the anti-Schwarzenegger crowd have rushed to, to disrupt.

Nope. And I work out. Big deal.

In attack mode now, huh?

Nope. It's called responding to an indirect post.

I wonder if I'd find your name among those oggling over Ann Coulter. Hmmm?

Nope. Nice try though.

Those answers are so simple, why should they indicate they had the questions before hand? It's clear Arnie can communicate basic ideas that resonate with a broad electorate, with an easy charm and grace. He distills a problem to a core point, which all good politicians can do.He can focus on the important things, like that other Californian from another era, Reagan :)
